Some beautiful fall colors in Leavenworth from our weekend away:

The weekend is over and the muscles are recovering….but a great time was had by all. This year we had a whopping 26 team members and for the first time we got team jerseys. With logo design done by our very own Sam Roberts and jersey design done by our very own Jack Hunter, we [...]

Last weekend was our annual backpacking trip with the Hunter-Ludders family. We set off to Baker Lake and hoped that the kiddos would do a little hiking on their own. As it turned out, Samuel and Sabine walked the entire 1.5 miles to our campsite!! We were on a beautiful spit, all on our own, [...]

I know…that subject line probably makes you cringe. Its the time of year, when I ask you (our few, but faithful, blog readers!) to think about supporting me in my annual MS Ride. For me, its one weekend a year. But for those living with Multiple Sclerosis, its MS time 365 days a year. For [...]

This weekend brought awesome Seattle weather, and with it we took to the water. Friday night Sabine’s friend Clodagh was staying with us, so Saturday we decided to take them paddling in the Arboretum to hunt for turtles and wildlife. This was Sabine’s first time sitting in the middle of the boat and our first [...]

Last weekend we headed to Saddlebag Island (near Anacortes, WA) for the Bine’s first overnight paddling trip. She’s a veteran camper at this point, but we haven’t ton a ton of paddling with her. My parents and sister came along for the fun and we met Mark’s brother’s family and their band of merry men. [...]

In good Schenk tradition, we’re celebrating Sabine’s birthday before, on, and after Sabine’s birthday (who doesn’t like to celebrate as many times as possible!) On Saturday we had friends over which included 12 kids and 18 adults. Courtney has already proclaimed our house a zoo, but Saturday gave new meaning to chaos. Fortunately an even [...]

Between all my travels this fall and Mark’s class and homework, we haven’t made it into the woods nearly as much as I would have liked. So, when we found ourselves with a sunny day, fresh snow in the mountains, and without homework, we packed ourselves into the car and got the h*&ll out of [...]

On Sunday the Bine and I headed to the Redmond area with Suzie and Clodagh to visit some local farms. First we went and played with pumpkins, alpaca, and goats. And after we went and saw Suzie’s nursery. I thought all the plants were the best part, but Bine and Clodagh liked the mud puddles [...]

This weekend the Steudel/Hunter/Ludders clan decided to take the kids on their first backpacking trip. Both kids (Samuel and Sabine) have done lots of camping and hiking, but never backpacking….the challenge being how to get both kids and all the gear to the destination. We decided to go to Barclay Lake off Rt. 2 since [...]

Well another successful and fun year at the annual MS Bike ride. This year the weather wasn’t as cooperative as it’s been in the past, today it rained quite a bit on the bikers! The team this year was smaller, and consisted of Bebeth, Lisa, and Mikaela; Ray and Cynthia were virtual riders. The Bine [...]

Bine and I went to the Greenlake wading pool this afternoon. Fun time.

Yesterday we took a great trip down the Delaware…and Sabine’s first! As always, the views were amazing, wildlife was seen, and fun was had. Couldn’t have been a better day!

This weekend Sabine did a little music playing with Mark…and had a great time.

As usual, Friday means hanging with the Bine and playing with Samuel and Jessica. Yesterday we did a bunch of things, but the most fun was had in the back yard playing in the new “pool” and whatever other random items we found lying around. There was lots of laughing, splashing, getting naked, and generally [...]

It’s Tristan’s last day with Sabine…a little traumatizing for all involved (except Sabine…who doesn’t understand!)

It was a great afternoon for a bike ride and to play in Bitter Lake with the Bine.

Yes, there is a Mt. Washington in Washington…not just in New Hampshire as some people think. Mark, Sabine, Kuja and I decided to make our way up it until we found a nice place for lunch. The hike gave our quads a workout, our eyes some nice views, and Kuja got to release a lot [...]

Saturday was one of those days when I’m reminded why I love living in Seattle. We obviously love getting out into the woods on a very regular basis, but sometimes its great to just have a city day. Samuel Hunter gave us a great excuse to stay in town, and we started off the day [...]

Who needs toys when you’ve got a backyard, a puddle, a dad, and a dog?

Sabine’s been having some new fun around here recently. Last week we went to the park at Greenlake and played on some new toys. Then today Sabine and Kuja got to enjoy her new table…just for her (and Kuja!)

Well the Bine has been walking for a couple of weeks now. She is also getting great at going up and DOWN stairs. She’s also getting adept at climbing onto coffee tables, couches, and pretty good at getting off of them too, with the occasional mishap. Here’s a more recent video of her walking.

Happy birthday Sabine. Looks like you (we’ve) come a long way. From being a blob of baby to a walking,  talking, eating, laughing, hiking/biking/fishing, 27 inch monster.

Nanya and Popop (aka mom and dad) were in town a few weekends ago and it coincided with Popop’s birthday. We decided to spend the day biking as a family. As it happened, they had given Sabine a cool new bike seat for her birthday which we had installed and ready for that day. The [...]

Great video of the Bine playing Peek-A-Boo without anything to hide behind. We also think she must be getting acting classes from someone, that initial flourish is awfully cute.

Last weekend Courtney and Arthur were in town for a visit. They’ve been stuck in flat Michigan for too long (their words, not mine) and so I knew they wanted to go hiking and see some beautiful views. Given their complaints about the flatness of Michigan, I thought taking them to the heights of the [...]

Well Sabine has been “cruising” a lot lately around chairs and  and it will be any day where she starts to take more than a couple steps. She’s really turning into such a little jokester and it seems like it’s just every 15 minutes or so till she either tries to get you to laugh, [...]

My good friend Alec arrived last week for a visit. We haven’t gotten to see him since the summer of 2006. With our time in Kenya and his time in French Guiana, its been hard to find a time to be in the same place. Despite this, Alec and the Bine have become fast friends. [...]

This weekend was a typical rainy PNW weekend. But not looking forward to being cooped up all day we thought we’d take a chance and go for a hike. So we drove out onto the the Mountain Highway loop and started a hike up to Heather Lake. It turned out to be a perfect day [...]

Sabine had another great Friday with Samuel and Clodagh. The highlight of the afternoon was cheerios and oyster crackers!

Well this week it’s been “Doctor Week”. Both of our “children” made a trip to their respective doctors. Kuja went in yesterday to get fixed, spent the night at the vet’s office and Bebeth went and picked her up this afternoon, with the instructions “Make sure she stays calm.” A puppy calm, are you serious? [...]

As many people know, Sabine gets to spend lots of time each week with Tristan. They take trips to the park, go for walks, roll around on the floor, and generally have a great time together. For awhile now, people have been asking for a photo…so here it is.

On Friday night Sabine got to do her first tree triming. We didn’t have a tree this year, so Dorothy and Troy let us join in on the fun. I don’t know how much Sabine appreciated the activity (especially since we wouldn’t let her eat ALL of the ornaments). But its one of my favorite [...]

I’m not sure if its the large number of problems around the world, or Americans’ tendency to forget things right after it happened…but I’m guessing most people don’t realize how much work is left to be done on the Gulf Coast from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. My mom has gone down many times to [...]

In an effort to tire out our youngest member of the family (Kuja), we decided to take a short hike out at Tiger Mountain. Mist turned to rain, and it ended up being quite the wet walk. But thanks to gortex we all had a great morning. Even The Bine didn’t mind a little wet [...]

On Sunday we took Kuja on her first hike. She’s come a long way in the last two weeks. When we first got her she was too scared to go more than a block or two….but on Sunday we were out for 2.5 hours! We kept her on the leash for a bit, and then [...]

Well it was Sabine’ first Halloween. She decided to go as a Frog! We hung out with The Ludders/Hunters family up on Capitol Hill. There are a couple of blocks on 17th that go all out. Lots of decorations, people dressed up in the yards, dry ice, etc. Here are a few pictures, check out [...]

So The Bine has been scooching, rolling, and doing The Catepillar to get around the house. But the other day she took her real first crawl, hands and knees moving together. Here it is captured on film ….

On Saturday we left the house at 8:15 am, drove to Spokane, and returned home 12 hours later with Kuja, our newest family member. We’ve been trying to adopt a puppy for awhile now, but it seems that having a child under the age of 7 makes us undesireable. So, when the Springer Spaniel Rescue [...]

Last fall Jessica and I started going each Friday to a uPick farm in Fall City to collect vegetables for the coming week.  It was on one of these trips that Jessica told me that she was also pregnant…just 5 weeks behind me! These trips were some of the highlights of my fall…together we could [...]
