Hey everyone, I posted some new photos from Katya’s birthday celebration and our trip to the sanatorium on Saturday: http://picasaweb.google.com/RStakun/JulyPt2?feat=directlink The sanatorium is near a church with a holy icon (or copy of one anyway) is as well as a monastery). The sulfur water there is considered holy/healthy as is the mud from the bottom [...]
I like Ufa more and more each day. Part of me wishes I could stay here all year rather than go back to school in August. :-/ There’s been a few rough days though. It’s pretty tough when you can’t do something you want to do, no matter how small. For example, the simple act [...]
Last week was pretty low key- we had a trip to a local art gallery that had a ton of interesting local contemporary art and then a visit to the Lenin museum. This weekend was super fun though. Katya and I met downtown on Saturday morning and walked to the riverside to sunbathe! We got [...]
I apologize it took so long to post something. Our first week was pretty busy and by the time I made it home everyday I was too tired to write anything. We arrived in Ufa on Friday around 10:00PM. We had spent all of Friday in Domededovo (Moscow) and I hadn’t slept at all on [...]
This songs gets stuck in my head every few weeks. An amazing video as well, except for the fact that everyone in this band looks like a total creep.
With this playing and the weird fluorescent lighting it was like being in a David Lynch movie.
because I have a sudden desire to watch the movie Superstar and can’t get this song out of my head:
Since I have no time to write anything except for papers for grad. school, I’ve decided to use this space to post videos of songs that are stuck in my head.
So that’s the virtual tour. Favorite things about my place: Storage in the kitchen, bathroom (there are deep panels at the bottom of the mirror in lieu of a medicine cabinet), my plants, and probably my little table (over which I just hung some picture frames – see last shot). Not so great things: The [...]
Kansas may not be exciting as Kyrgyzstan but it’s still a huge adjustment from what I’m used to on the East Coast. Na primer – strangers talk to each other all the time (grocery store, waiting in line, etc). Also, I’ve always understood the whole 9pm/8 Central thing on major networks but to actually see [...]

A pretty good article on the German population in Kyrgyzstan. We were always trying to ascertain where/when the Germans arrived in KG but everyone seemed to have a different answer! According to this article it seems the answer was “All of the above.”
Wow - It’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything. Apologies, a combination of factors (namely grad school apps/visits/funding and work) has left me a bit uninspired of late.
However - today inspiration struck! During crunch time for applications I limited my posts to funny videos, websites, etc but it’s time to get back to business.
I was [...]

so i just looked up that US Airways flight 1549, the one that crashed in the Hudson River maybe a half an hour ago. The first result on google was the following (as of 4:25pm :
Track status of US Airways flight 1549
15 Jan 2009 - New [...]
I’m starting to think that this:
…is starting to look like this:
Geez even the color key is the same.
“the palindrome is closely linked to death, cannibalism, beheading, and murder”
Canadian director Guy Maddin’s (The Saddest Music in the World) tribute to silent Soviet cinema. You’d almost think it was genuine….
When did this happen?!
Ironically, this is exactly what my writing sample for grad school is on. When my roommate showed me this video, I (after flipping out at how great it is) asked him whether it was “real”. By real I meant, that it was indeed a band of animatronic characters covering an Usher song. [...]
This is courtesy of Nick’s friend Josh - apparently the theater has taken it off their website because I can’t find it anymore.

While doing some additional research for my writing sample (it’s been a few years - there must be new information out there yeah?) I came across an indie band called Omon Ra (Wha?!?)
Omon Ra isn’t a cult, at least not yet, joke guitarists Dan Miller and Zach Fairbrother. Since last fall, Omon Ra has wooed [...]
Sorry no posts for awhile - I’ve gone underground until these applications are finished. This is my latest attempt to create some sort of happiness for myself - let’s just hope it works.
In the meantime…enjoy:
At the Exxon on Capitol Hill:
A homeless guy walks up to U.S. Capitol Police officer who is filling her patrol car.
Homeless Guy: “You know, when Obama wins, it’s going to be crazy around here.”
Officer: “Really, how do you know?”
Homeless Guy: “Go to my web site, I’ve been writing about it.”
Amazing - Obama won Pennsylvania (obviously because of my absentee ballot sent from Kyrgyzstan!) AND Virginia (who hasn’t voted for a Democratic president in 44 years). I’ve been sort of verklempt all night but I felt it would be too lame to cry out of happiness….
I ran out into the street once Obama was declared [...]
