The end of my service is coming to a close. In fact, it is charging towards me at an incredible rate of speed. There is nothing I can do, except pretend to know what is going on as I scramble to get things done before I get on a plane at the Chisinau airport for the last time. The past few weeks have been a speedy blur of dinners and activity, including softball games and camps … and paperwo...

To all three of my devoted readers: The weeks are still flying by and as of yesterday, I have one month in country left to go. Last weekend, we slaughtered the lamb and cooked it up over some coals. The camping aspect was canceled, due to rain, but I managed to squeeze about 14 people into my apartment. The night went without a hitch, except for two instances. One being, the neighbors were not...

May 25, 2010 The days are flying by as are the birds? Last weekend I took a class field trip up to Soroca and monasteries in the area. We left by bus from Ceadir-Lunga at one in the morning on Saturday and came back at one in the morning on Sunday. It was a six hour, over-night ride up to the north and then we spent the day ping-ponging between points of interest. Needless to say, I was ex...

May 21, 2010 The weather has been in a process of crumbling into chilly rain, a surprise as it has been sunny and warm as of late. You know what they say though: “May showers are the result of April fools day (I know they don't say this.).” Despite, the weather is nice enough to go around town in a hoody or a T-shirt and the sun is supposed to be back very soon... A few things have...

LET'S START CALLING IT THE WAR JOURNAL It has been a while since I wrote anything down on this blog and this may have to do with the simple fact that its hard to top travel writing, coming down from the high of actual travel. More precisely, there isn't much I can report that I haven't covered at some point in the last two years and – short of boring you with my musings – I felt there was no...

April 22, 2010 As I walked into the x-ray room, I noticed that it was old, wooden-floored and furnished in a similar manner to my apartment. The x-ray apparatus was soviet-era – a large machine with a yellow, cylindrical tube attached, where I assumed the x-ray visioning takes place. Out of the cylinder, black, corroding cables sprouted out of each end. While we waited on the bench – which w...

April 13, 2010 I'm back in Moldova and enjoying the spring weather. The cherry trees are blossoming and I can see their white petals out of my third story apartment window. The rest of my vacation in France went very well and I eventually made it back to Moldova – despite getting robbed (essentially) by a taxi driver in Bucharest. On Saturday night, we all stayed up until 6 am and said good...

For something different and potentially embarrassing, I am going to write a few excerpts from my journal, which I've recorded so far. At the end of this little trip, I'm sure I'll write up a day-by-day account but, in the meantime: 18:57; April 1 "The plane took off and hour late because the engine lights were coming on. Great. I actually thought we were going to have an on time departure, le...

Oh, what an effect the weather can have on my well-being. I sit in my apartment with the sun streaming in through the window, sipping my “Indian” style tea and think about the winter – long, brutal and cold. The heater is off, I have clothes drying on pieces of pink twine in the kitchen – the kitchen window open with a mild breeze coming in – and I just finished a cookie. As Ignatius Reil...

March 17, 2010 Spring is coming upon us fast and it has been very nice getting back into the groove of school and life after our first spring break. Life alone in my apartment is better than it ever was living with a host family and it also gives me a few more tasks to keep me busy (for example, I have to decide what to eat every night and there are clothes soaking in the tub right now that I ...

I decided to spend my second to last school break in country, traveling around and taking in all of this little country. Needless to say, the week generally involved lots of food and drinking - as any good vacation should - and Saturday is leaving me ready for the routine of the work week and a break from our decadent consumption(s). I forgot my camera at site, but here is a recount of the week we...

February 23, 2010 Today is the national Russian army day which, in other words, translates into national mens' day. While we are not in Russia and I am not a Moldovan or Russian citizen I was still given a pair of socks, in honor of this glorious occasion. The holiday itself though has jogged my memory about a few topics that I'd like to discuss. I think you'll find a cohesive thread, with...

February 17, 2010 I'm in! I am currently sitting in a t-shirt and long underwear in my new apartment. This morning I was naked; it didn't matter, because I live alone. For all you know, I am naked right now. Last night, we made green curry with vegetables, my friends left and then I was alone; I liked the feeling. The move went pretty smoothly but, as expected, after the PC representative ...

'Is that The Mountain?' asked Bilbo in a solemn voice, looking at it with round eyes. He had never seen a thing that looked so big before. 'Of course not!' said Balin. 'That is only the beginning of the Misty Mountains, and we have got to get through, or over, or under those somehow, before we can come into Wilderland beyond. And it is a deal of a way even from the other side of them to the Lon...

February 6, 2010 At the moment, I am sitting in an Andy's Pizza in Cahul, Moldova. The plan for the day was to meet up with a friend and spend the day waiting for more friends, but the friend in question is home sick. This leaves me in quite a predicament, because my last bus to Cahul was at 9:25 this morning and now I have a whole day of nothing to do, until the second set of friends comes by...

What is the Den? The den is my room, where I sit and do a whole lot on my computer. I took the week off of running, for my ankle and the cold conditions (my face almost fell off on Sunday), and I've been spending a lot of time in the den. I've gotten quite the workout routine going with push ups, sit ups, arm raises (using a dictionary) and squats. Back to the computer though; I would die witho...

This weekend was fairly interesting, as I actually got myself out of the south of Moldova and went to see friends in the big city - or near there. On Friday, I went into the head quarters to drop off some grant information, and then hopped a bus to Calarasi, where Martin, Jeff and I met to make sushi. Jeff has a nice apartment in his raion center and we spent the evening making hand-roll after han...

A work of complete fiction I met Jordan in town on Friday evening, as the bus station we drank a beer and ate peanuts. We were awaiting the arrival of Jordan's friend Allie and and man named Adrian. I didn't know where the night would take us; I assumed it would be a relaxing night, making food and getting some sleep. Allie called and said that they were in close, in a taxi. When they sh...

The cannoli that was heard round the world... There is quite a lot to write about since I last published something on this website. The coming of the new year and the realization that I have have come down to the final chapter of my service weigh heavily on my mind, but leave me feeling light in the heart. The first of my good friends in the 22nd group of PC Moldova will be leaving in exactly ...

December 28th We woke up and went into the great hall to eat our Turkish breakfasts. After walking around the town for a bit to look at stuff to buy, we got back into the trusty Fiat to make it back to Istanbul. The drive went fairly well and the addition of Charlie's mix tapes made everything better. We stopped off at McDonalds on the way into the city and then finally into Istanbul. Making...

December 26 I woke up and frantically tried to wake Charles up. I made a realization while in Turkey Charlie is a college kid and sleeps until noon, on a regular basis. I'm not and I wake up at nine. After showers and a bit of breakfast, we went to our usual haunt, Starbucks, to get some coffee. After fortifying our minds with black gold, Charlie and I left the gear with Kelly and Mike and he...

2009 Turkeys For the Turkey blog, I will be submitting a blog a day for a couple days. I'll try to correspond photos with the dates I'm writing about. Enjoy? December 24 I spent the morning sitting around Charlie's dorm room. Eventually, I got him out of bed and we made it over to a kebab place to get some kebab and aryan which is a salty yogurt drink. Charlie went off to class and I had...

I flew into Attaturk Airport yesterday at about 1:30 p.m. In an attempt to be as thrifty as possible, I was going to take a bus into the center and then a taxi to Charlie"s dorm but, I was told that it would even out to about the same price. I ended up spending about 50 lyra (or 40 to 45 bucks) on a taxi, which dropped me off to find the illustrious Charles sitting on a brick planter, wearin...

Thought I'd write briefly to tell you about the tremendous amount of snow we have gotten in the past couple days. There is literally 4 feet of snow outside, which makes day to day life pretty interesting. I've had a cold for the past few days, which makes shoveling the walk really fun... I went to get money out of my ATM yesterday, and to buy an electric tea kettle for my room and had to dodge sk...

It began snowing last night and it has been going strong all day. If I were to hazard a guess, we've got about 6 or 7 inches on the ground. Last year, we had a bit of snow, but this year is a whole different ball game! I thought I'd put up a blog to show you some photos of the southern snow... If the sun comes out tomorrow, I'll post some more because everyone likes to look at the snow in the sun...

Productivity is a Relative Term I went woke up today with a painful cough; my sternum also felt as though someone had hit it with a hammer. My partner told me that if I wasn't feeling well, I should go home. So, I went home and proceeded to watch 5 episodes of Lost... After feeling as though my whole day shouldn't be spent in sweat pants, watching lost and drinking чай, I put...

I suppose I have a fair amount to write about. It is a dreary day, in-suit with winter, but today there was the slightest trace of snow falling. I think that the mist I referred to in the previous article froze on its way down. In any event it is 8:54 and the 'snow' has turned back into water. Last weekend we played a charity concert at my site. It was more of a talent show for kids in the commu...

Just as promised, time really is starting to fly by. Despite the fact that I've had some problems at home, etc., there is no denying the fact that it is already December 1st. I literally have about 3 and ½ weeks until I fly out to Turkey and then I'll be coming back for my 4th and final semester as an English teacher in the Peace Corps. I remember this time last year vividly and it really do...

November 21, 2009Сегодя I am sitting in the Circelan's kitchen, drinking coffee and trying to think about what to base this blog on. Some rather unfortunate, yet positive things have happened as of late down in Cedir-Lunga, but right now I am very content and happy to be in my favorite house in Moldova. In brief, I had another run-in with host dad. This time he...
