Since schools reopened, the remaining purchases were made to allow for project construction to continue. Once again, we encountered some small problems with attaining all materials, but the ordered toilet seat covers should arrive soon. All finance records on the side of the Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP) have been submitted, in great thanks to project leader, Joyce, who has developed
Time has flown….I am on my 24th month in South Africa. As of now, I am preparing to be back on U.S.A. soil come 13 August. Just after my 25th birthday. And at this moment, I am occupied by all sorts of things…dancing to World Cup anthems, leading morning yoga sessions, fitting a condom on my head to demonstrate durability, saying good bye to friends and family and passing out my few remaining

The storm saved me.It is the 17th of March. Usually, there is nothing that can distract me from my cultural obligation to this holiday. Last year, my nearest volunteer and I skipped school and headed to our nearest shopping town for pap (South Africa’s maize meal, staple food) and Amarula (similar to our Bailey’s Irish crème), both of which we colored green with our own food coloring. This year,
Hello friends and family, I am rounding the corner of my Peace Corps service in South Africa and heading back to the states in August, after living for two years in the village of Gemsbokspruit. Having learned from village members about community life and real pain, I am grateful for this experience and what it has taught me, I have the capability to give of myself whether it is with a smile or

With the cold comes a golden tasty treat. South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere, our seasons are just opposite of U.S.A. and since the start of May we have entered the winter months. My home and stretched green grass yard provide me with plenty of fine gifts like room for yoga with my girls group or my favorite- morning fruit bites. With the passing of another cold night , I can
In need of a little cultural activity, I attended the wedding for my primary school principal’s daughter. In the village, traditionally everyone is invited to attend the wedding celebration which is usually held out of the church and a lebola of cattle gifted to the ladies family is absolutely required. Lebola is a price that the groom marrying pays to the bride’s family. A mutual respect

April and its’ holiday break was very eventful as I participated in the Long Tom half-marathon and went hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains. Both activities were firsts and absolutely amazing! With support from stateside friends and family I was able to qualify and raise $150 to put towards the KLM foundation and participate in the Longtom half-marathon. The KLM foundation funds a
I found out that there was a Shopaholic movie out only a week ago; I don't get to see many advertisements. When I heard about it, I immediately made a timeline as to when I could see it (movies are one of my new found favorite first world activities). My sister, Carly and I had a very serious obsession with the series when we were in University. I figured I could find time when I am in the
I have agreed to start a resource room for learner intervention in Literacy. Educators have identified learners to receive special attention in English language, reading and writing. The room identified as a library, in which I had organized textbooks in, had also acted as a staff lounge for two educators. The educators have agreed to graciously move (quite a change for them, I am very
Hot, dry, and so much suffering, is that what comes to mind when you hear Africa? Just like North America, Africa is a large and a diverse continent. Some parts of Africa are very lush with vegetation and the rainy seasons give way to a great deal of harvesting opportunity too. In SA this income-generating partnership is set and well, the demand in the western world is so grand for fruits and
Note on gifting Haley in SA:
I have received several inquiries concerning items to be sent to me. If you are interested in sending me something or advising someone of what can be sent, I’ve noted a list of items that I would like, but really, I would most appreciate some LETTERS/EMAILS and or your support in funding the LONGTOM half-marathon I will participate in at the closing of March.

Interterm-service training took place at the closing of January, marking a completed 6 months in South Africa. Within this time we have been sworn in as official volunteers, have had 11 Peace Corps Volunteers early terminate service in our cohort, I have traveled to two other Provinces of SA, PC has gained a new Country director, and I have met dozens of new people and made even more friends.
Many months since my last blogging, I want to apologize, I just received my lovely lap top from super friend Erin Gannon, you all have this beautiful Ohio lady to thank for strengthening our communication!
Within the last months, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to vacation coastal Zululand of South Africa(KwaZulu-Natal Province) and Swaziland, have attended further PC training, and
Each day has it’s unique ability to open to something I never thought it would be. What I mean is- I am never able to predict where my day may take me. There is some sort of engine which encourages you each morning to make a mental plan for the day that is folding in front of you, what I am trying my best to do instead, is let this guide have its place in my back pocket but not so much be held

Sorry to have not kept my blog writing frequent. I own a cellular I can use to check my email but am reluctant to write anything lengthily as my thumbs can’t take to the exercise just yet. Feel free to write me a personal email, I so enjoy reading a note from friends and family rather than junk mail updates. Below are a few journal experts with the most recent in closing. I am looking forward
Greetings Friends and Family,
I have successfully completed a single month of my training to become a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV). My time thus far has been fulfilling in a great many ways. As any nontraditional path may lead-a sequence of mysteries comes with each new day. But, I am well aware that this time in our so-called, “gated community” in Troya, Mpumelanga Province only offers a peak
highly asked question: How am I feeling given that my time to leave for my travels is coming near? Simply put, I am looking forward to my new adventure but sad to say goodbye. Lately a great deal of anxiety anticipating the learning load kicks in especially as I find another item I don't think I can bare to live without in South Africa. PC allows us to take two checked bags, one of which

Often South Africans are in search of answers to their past sorrow and have collectively relied on the colonial philosophy: Unbuntu
Unbunto meaning: 'I am because we are, and since we are, therefore I am'
translation: you have made me into the person- 'It is through others that one attains selfhood.'
I am because of compassion and generosity (some additionally place the concept of tolerance)

I usually refer to length as PC volunteer as 2 years because it is 2 years of PC volunteer service I must complete, once orientation(D.C.) and training are complete
2 years.. is an easy reference..but if you want to get technical..there are details in an earlier blog (see dates below).
I am not a volunteer until I am sworn in, which isn't until a 3 month training period is complete.

I called for acceptance today. I was required to share with the placement assistant what my service work actually consisted of. Once I summarized my duties, I was told about my coming deadlines concerning filing for passport and visa and writing an aspiration statement.
