Hi all Bonjour tout le mondeI arrived in Lome the capital of Togo safe and sound last night after a two long flights both about 7 hours long with a short stop in the Paris airport. I am a little jet lagged but other than that I feel wonderful and I am so excited to be here. My French is quickly coming back to me and many aspects of what I've seen so far remind me very much of Madagascar

On Thursday my training group all swore in as Peace Corps volunteers and now the two year countdown begins Not that I'm in any hurry to go home although I do miss everyone. I'm excited to get started working in my villageWe left Adeta Thursday morning and after a sad farewell to friends and host families as if I won't be in the same region for the next couple years we drove to Lome for som

I now know what people mean when they say that Peace Corps is a 247 job. And I'm not just talking about the fact that we constantly adapt to a faoreign language and culture even the work itself never seems to stop So I'll run down the projects that have been keeping me busy and making the time fly by some of which I've mentioned beforeI am finally starting up the gardening club at the l

AIDS Ride was a total success We biked about 30 km per day through probably the most hilly and mountainous region of the country and our two teams conducted HIVAIDS sensibilizations at upwards of 6 villages high schools and middle schools per day. I found my niche doing the condom demonstrations on a wooden penis but we all got to try out all of the aspects of the program ABCD skits for p

In the last 3 weeks Irsquove made many new friends in my village and itrsquos starting to feel like home. Even the children on the road are yelling BONSOIR STEVEN which is a lot better than Yovo I have a new friend that is in his final year of high school and I found lots of odd jobs for him to do so that I can justify helping him to pay his school fees. Cleaning the latrine and fixing t

Hi allSorry for the long delay I've experienced some technical difficulties and after writing a long entry just before Thanksgiving and lost the whole thing before I could publish. So let me fill you in...Basically this month has been one of the busiest of my life between work in my village traveling for meetings and of course a nice but ohsoshort Thanksgiving vacation.World AIDS Day was a

Hi everyoneThe last 2 weeks have flown by so fast that I am having trouble remembering exactly what happened. Basically I have been busy improving my French learning the Eve language and learning about small businesses and nonprofits in Togo. My days are pretty routine which helps them fly by breakfast around 730 then clas from 8 to 12 then a break for lunch when I go home and hang out w

So I've just spent my first two weeks or so in village and to be totally honest it was much harder than I expected. I am living on my own now in a rural African community which means I do all my shopping manage my time and schedule and my learn the ropes of who I can depend on around me. It's difficult to constantly feel like a stranger since every time I leave the house children shout the Yo

I am in an internet cafe in Atakpame the regional capital of the Plateau and I finlly found an internet cafe that is not excruciatingly slow. I am on my way back to Adeta to finish the last month of stage or training but first I will spend the weekend here with all the other regional PCVs to throw a party and stay in the Maison de Passage here. This is where we will come to meet colect mail

Sorry for the delay in posting a new entry. The computers in Togo are incredibly slow and we have to travel 45 minutes to get to a working internet cafe so I may not be able to corespond as much as I had hoped at leat until I finish training and swear in as a Peace Corps volunteers so that I can access the fast computers and post some pictures.The last few days have been full of excitement an

I had a great minivacation to Ouagadougou Waga Burkina Faso followed by an inservice training for business volunteers and an allvolunteer conference and now I'm ready to get back to work in my village.Waga is a beautiful city very developed with big buildings wide clean boulevards good restaurants and beautiful cinemas. I took a bush taxi trip up the country so I got to see Kara an
