"Antigua, muy tranquilo" Stevefn's photos around Antigua, Guatemala

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Antigua, Guatemala by TravelPod blogger Stevefn titled "Antigua, muy tranquilo.". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Stevefn's travel blog entry: "So I'm finally on my way then. The flight down went without a hitch, luckily, as I was a bit worried (well not really, just wanted to mention it) about my one-way ticket to Guatemala City. I've heard about people flying on one-way tickets from the US to Latin America, being forced to buy a return ticket (refundable, so no big deal I guess) for different reasons. It turned out to be a non-issue on this flight. Currently I'm in Antigua, as planned, my first destination so far on this trip. Antigua is an extremely agreeable and pleasant old Spanish colonial city (one of the great cities of the old Spanish empire, so they say). The perfect first stop I would think, to kind of ease your way into the backpacker style. So I'm here on my fourth day, just chilling. So far it feels very different from the other trips I've done over the years, not being restricted by a limited number of days or weeks to see and do as much as possible (in the shortest possible time.) Nothing wrong with that, but it feels great not to have a schedule set in stone. Traveling solo also make things a bit different, although I very much like my own company! I guess it's one of those things some solo travelers consider before they set out on their own. How easy will it be to meet other people, or strike ... From: TripAdvisorTRIPWOW3 Views: 1 0 ratings Time: 01:23 More in Travel & Events

"Exploring the Jungle" Alleifer's photos around Punta Gorda, Belize

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Punta Gorda, Belize by TravelPod blogger Alleifer titled "Exploring the Jungle". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Alleifer's travel blog entry: "I had the opportunity to learn more about the origins of Cotton Tree from Chris. Chris had many formative experiences that played a part in building this jungle lodge. He was a carpenter, a mariner, and a high end innkeeper. For nearly two decades he alternated between running an inn on Martha's Vineyard and running a sailboat charter business in Belize. Eighteen years ago he bought this land after he explored the Moho River, using it as a personal campground. He designed the place himself - he already knew the best place to put the main lodge building- it is on the site of his former outhouse with a great view of the river and just above the flood line! When we first arrived I marveled on how everything was built up on planks high away from the river. Our cabana was on 15-foot stilts on land 5 feet above the river and the walkways were built farther inland on 5-foot planks. Chris found the high water marks on the trees on the riverbank and built in a several foot margin of safety. Before our trip was over we would need that margin of safety. We saved our last two days for our deep jungle explorations. We traveled to Rio Blanco Falls and National Park a 90-minute jolting ride on the lodge's jungle bus. Antonio was our guide as we hiked to the swimming hole and the kids ... From: TripAdvisorTRIPWOW4 Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:07 More in Travel & Events

"Athletic Feats, Travel and More" Amyandrob's photos around Altun Ha, Corozal, Belize City, Belize

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Altun Ha, Corozal, Belize City, Belize by TravelPod blogger Amyandrob titled "Athletic Feats, Travel and More" Amyandrob's travel blog entry: "Since we went so long between the last updates, we figured that we'd give you all a bonus entry. Plus, have a lot to say as we've been quite busy working, traveling and...well, take a look: AMY'S UPDATE I'm continuing on my quest for funding for both the reading project and YWCA. "Tings haad" is what I'm hearing all around, but I have managed to make some headway. Over at UB (that's Belizean shorthand for University of Belize, where my reading project is based), I've found myself writing letters and calling poultry distributors to ask for donations of "chickens." Barbeques are very popular here for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, and a lot of groups put them on as fundraisers. Chicken is the most expensive part, hence my interesting work of late. Not something I thought I'd be doing in Belize, but it's an experience! And at the YWCA, the swimming fundraiser/water safety education event I'm organizing is kind of, sort of taking off. A lot of the public's attention is diverted right now by the pending elections (see below), so I've had to do some serious jumping up and down and figurative flag waving to get anyone to listen, but it's slowly paying off. The event is on March 19th, so there's still some time. Plus, one of the things we've learned and that has been reinforced by ... From: TripAdvisorTRIPWOW3 Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 00:57 More in Travel & Events

"Back to Work" Amyandrob's photos around Belize City, San Pedro, Belize

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Belize City, San Pedro, Belize by TravelPod blogger Amyandrob titled "Back to Work" Amyandrob's travel blog entry: "The time has flown by (lately, at least). We're finding it hard to believe that in June we will be the "senior" PC group in the country, with the '04 arrivals finishing up and the new group coming in. Ten months in Belize has given us both a chance to reflect on our work and life to date. Here's the latest: AMY'S UPDATE For me, reflection has meant yet another slight change. My work with the literacy program, while interesting, hasn't really been keeping me very busy of late. So, with the encouragement of my PC manager, I have formally switched my assignment to the YWCA. I'll be continuing with the literacy program as a secondary project, working on bringing authors, poets and literature professors into the schools to serve as role models. And at the YWCA, I'll be building on my work on project development and fundraising with an eye towards better positioning the organization to appeal to regional and international donors. The fundraiser for the YWCA's swimming pool that I was working on took place in March and made almost BZ$3500! It's a pretty good result, especially launching a brand new event where no one really considers swimming a sport (yeah, we also think it's odd for a country that borders the Caribbean). There was talk of scheduling this every three or six months, but I've been trying to explain ... From: TripAdvisorTRIPWOW4 Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:07 More in Travel & Events

UH Manoa - Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Gubernatorial Proclamation

RPCV Richard Port reads Govenor Abercrombie's proclamation in celebration of the Peace Corps 50th Anniversary. Invited speakers included Ann and Richard Port (Ghana 1), Ned Shultz (Korea 1), Rosemary Casey and Sena Pierce. The event was held from 2:30-5 pm. in Hemenway Hall courtyard (aka Manoa Gardens). This event marked President Kennedy's March 1, 1961 signing of the Executive Order creating the Peace Corps. The move to create the Peace Corps came on the heels of a now-famous, impromptu speech he gave on the campaign trail at the University of Michigan a few months earlier. In front of a large crowd of students, Kennedy said: "How many of you who are going to be doctors, are willing to spend your days in Ghana? Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service and spend your lives traveling around the world? On your willingness to do that, not merely to serve one year or two years in the service, but on your willingness to contribute part of your life to this country, I think will depend the answer whether a free society can compete." Since the executive was signed, more than 200000 mostly young Americans have gone off as Peace Corps Volunteers to live in rural, poor cities and villages in 139 countries on every continent but Antarctica. They have undertaken training to work in a variety of programs, from teaching English, to building wells, to beekeeping. In 2011, the Peace Corps has 8675 volunteers serving in 77 countries. "More of life" Amyandrob's photos around Belize City, San Ignacio, Caye Caulker, Belize

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Belize City, San Ignacio, Caye Caulker, Belize by TravelPod blogger Amyandrob titled "More of life..." Amyandrob's travel blog entry: "It's been a while since we last updated you, and a lot has been going on. We weathered our first Belizean colds - better known as "the flu" here because you can't get a cold in a warm environment, or so we hear - and are now just awaiting the arrival of the dry season where it will be pleasantly in the 70's - we hope - and, well, not rainy. Amy's Update My role over the last month appears to have been to appear on the evening news in audience shots from different programs/openings/conferences I've been to. We don't often watch the news, but I always know when I've been on because the next day I'll hear, "Hey, I saw you on the news last night!" from at least three people. While the grant for the rural development project that I mentioned last time still isn't 100% confirmed, the Y has gotten two more grants in the last month, both for HIV/AIDS work. And, in what I'm finding is not uncommon here, both must be completed in extremely short spans of time. One by the end of the year and the next by the end of March. Good thing one of our fellow volunteers transferred to the Y last month. She attended the same HIV/AIDS workshop I went to in September and has been hugely helpful getting both projects running. But, things are about to change for me, and I'll be dropping back on my time at the Y ... From: TripAdvisorTRIPWOW2 Views: 1 0 ratings Time: 01:10 More in Travel & Events

Kids to Kids Video - 2010

Kids to Kids is a youth-led program that creates opportunity for kids to be kids worldwide through the participation in arts, sports, education and environmental projects -- creating a new generation of leaders and global citizens both here at home and abroad. Kids to Kids was started in 2005 by four middle school-aged girls. Their goal was to help children in other countries develop their artistic, athletic and educational interests and enjoy childhood. Their plan was simple: gather money and supplies through kids in the United States and ship them to kids in underserved communities abroad. Initially they collected supplies and money and sent them to the Dominican Republic (DR). In 2006, they made their first trip to the DR to meet the kids they were helping. When they saw the conditions on the ground and realized their ability to create positive changes in the lives of other kids, the girls decided to expand their work. Looking for people integrated into communities worldwide whose judgment they could trust, the girls turned to Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs). Based on discussions with a number of PCVs and the local community leaders with whom they were partnered, the plan to expand the reach of Kids to Kids was hatched. Kids to Kids has come a long way in the past several years! Last year we integrated our successful program into a bigger organization, World Connect, for administrative support. We are now working in twelve countries around the world. We no longer collect ... From: WorldConnectUS Views: 205 1 ratings Time: 05:09 More in Nonprofits & Activism

Honduras.

Honduras / República de Honduras is a republic in Central America. It was formerly known as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras (now Belize). The country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Its size is just over 112000 km² with an estimated population of almost 8 million. Its capital is Tegucigalpa. Hurricane Fifi caused severe damage while skimming the northern coast of Honduras on 18 September and 19, 1974. Melgar Castro (197578) and Paz Garcia (197882) largely built the current physical infrastructure and telecommunications system of Honduras. In 1979, the country returned to civilian rule. A constituent assembly was popularly elected in April 1980 and general elections were held in November 1981. A new constitution was approved in 1982 and the PLH government of Roberto Suazo assumed power. Roberto Suazo won the elections with a promise to carry out an ambitious program of economic and social development in Honduras in order to tackle the country's recession. President Roberto Suazo Cordoba did launch ambitious social and economic development projects, sponsored by American development aid. Honduras became host to the largest Peace Corps mission in the world, and nongovernmental and international voluntary agencies proliferated.
