Covering China -- A Conversation with Rob Schmitz

China's economic rise is one of the most dramatic and complex stories of our time. Reporting on the rapid and sweeping changes underway in there and what those changes mean for the Chinese and everybody else is a great challenge. One reporter who does this consistently well is Marketplace's Rob Schmitz. He's helped us understand a wide range of stories from currency debates and stimulus spending to inflation worries and how families seek to prepare their children to compete in the global economy. In March he generated a lot of discussion by reporting that a widely heard and discussed report about conditions at FoxConn factories turning out Apple and other products had been fabricated. His report led to an unprecedented retraction of Mike Daisey's story by This American Life. Schmitz joined Marketplace in 2010. Prior to that, he was the Los Angeles bureau chief for KQED's The California Report. He's also reported for KPCC (89.3), and as a reporter for Minnespota Public Radio. Prior to his radio career, Schmitz lived and worked in China; first as a teacher in the Peace Corps, then as a freelance print and video journalist. Book Trailer: The Yeti Quotient

When humanitarian scientists Maggie James and Jangbu Tong develop the fountain of youth by slightly altering and augmenting a plant growing naturally in northeast Nepal, it's a win-win - or is it? As news of the miracle plant is leaked by an enthusiastic Peace Corps volunteer, envy, greed, and power take over by way of a merchant herbalist, politicians, bankers, and their lobbyists. As these interests collide, the United States and China are pitted against each other, and both must face Nepali Gurkhas, provoking an international incident that will decide whether a health miracle will be available to all - or sold for record profits... Other mammals should not be abused for any unncessary reason so I am Vegan. It helps 1000's of mammals, our health care system, environment and even can reduce or end world hunger! I really like VeganOutreach.org and Mercy for Animals (MeatVideo.com - must see factory farms). VeganHealth.org (RD), VeganBodyBuilding.com, FamousVeggie.com. I am for peace, refused to use my skills in the airforce dropping bombs if I dont agree to the circumstances. I repsect those serving with good intentions though. The Candy Shoppe Antiques and Collectibles.mpg

Located at the Volo Antique Malls in Volo, IL. The Candy Shoppe Antiques and Collectibles is a life-long collector of those things that have defined who we are and how we've lived. Some items are from the dealer's own life growing up in a military family living and traveling around the world, living in Africa with the Peace Corps in the 60s. Others come from her personal collections as well as her own continuous hunt for the beautiful, the unusual and the historic. The Candy Shoppe Antiques and Collectibles has a large collection of restaurant ware, including china, glassware and flatware, both unmarked and top marked, and featuring hotels, restaurants, corporations, hospitals, universities, private schools, military, government and fraternal organizations, to name a few. Some unusual things there right now include: travel and propaganda brochures from Mussolini's Italy, uncut slot machine reels that look great framed, and an incredible art deco chandelier with glass shades. Unfortunately, there is only so much room, so this booth tends to have a little of a lot of things. From: Volo5Malls Views: 5 0 ratings Time: 08:15 More in Film & Animation

Communism Song.m4v

We had to sing this with the rest of our faculty for the 90 anniversary of the Communist Party of China. It's kind of a Red song mashup (something like four songs in one), but generally it's your standard Red song with lines like, "The women love watching the Red Army," "Praise be to the great Mao Zedong," and, "Cut the enemy's heads off with our machetes." VA and I were clearly the most comfortable singing this. Somehow the Japanese teacher got out of it. Regardless, we wore our Peace Corps pins while we sang. Nuclear Weapons Commercial: Hubert Humphrey 1968 Presidential Campaign Election Ad

thefilmarchive.org Minnesota elected Humphrey to the United States Senate in 1948 on the DFL ticket, unseating incumbent Republican Joseph H. Ball with 60% of the vote, and he took office on January 3, 1949. He was the first Democrat elected senator from the state of Minnesota since before the Civil War. Humphrey's father died that year, and Humphrey stopped using the "Jr." suffix on his name. He was re-elected in 1954 and 1960. His colleagues selected him as majority whip in 1961, a position he held until he left the Senate on December 29, 1964 to assume the vice presidency. During this period, he served in the 81st, 82nd, 83rd, 84th, 85th, 86th, 87th, and a portion of the 88th Congress. Initially, Humphrey's support of civil rights led to his being ostracized by Southern Democrats, who dominated most of the Senate leadership positions and who wanted to punish Humphrey for proposing the successful civil rights platform at the 1948 Convention. However, Humphrey refused to be intimidated and stood his ground; his integrity, passion and eloquence eventually earned him the respect of even most of the Southerners. His acceptance by the Southerners was also helped a great deal when Humphrey became a protege of Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. Humphrey became known for his advocacy of liberal causes (such as civil rights, arms control, a nuclear test ban, food stamps, and humanitarian foreign aid), and for his long and witty speeches. "Morocco" Jhinterl's photos around Morocco, Morocco

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Morocco, Morocco by TravelPod blogger Jhinterl titled "Morocco!". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Jhinterl's travel blog entry: "I don't even know where to start when writing about Morocco... it definitely rates as one of the most different and interesting places I have ever been, probably right alongside China. Everything about the culture, religion, food, customs and people is completely different. I didn't know much about Morocco before we left on January 30 to spend four days, but I loved every minute of my time spent there. The program I went on was a Morocco Exchange Program which is lead by people who have finished their service in the Peace Corps in Morocco and wanted to stay in the country a little while longer. They provided us with a little more background about the country, etiquette advice and shared with us their personal experiences with the people. As I said Morocco is unlike any country I have ever visited. This could partly be because almost the entire population is Muslim, which has a direct impact on every aspect of the culture. We took a survey before participating in this Morocco Exchange Program about our impressions of Muslims and Moroccans in general. I had to admit I knew hardly anything about their religion and what I did know was skewed by the bias in the American media. It's obvious after Sept. 11th many American's views of Muslims and the Islamic faith is a negative one. In Class With Peace Corps Volunteers in Africa, Asia

I'm Carolyn Presutti with the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http March first was the fiftieth anniversary of the Peace Corps. President John Kennedy began the program in nineteen sixty-one. The Peace Corps sends American volunteers to provide technical assistance in education and other areas in developing countries. Amanda Pease is one of almost forty volunteers serving in rural schools in Sierra Leone.Ms. Pease teaches science at Saint Joseph's, a high school in eastern Sierra Leone. She studied chemical engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. She decided to serve for two years in the Peace Corps after she finished her degree. Peace Corps volunteers left Sierra Leone in nineteen ninety-four because of civil war. But now they are back. Science teachers are in especially short supply. Efforts in Sierra Leone to get more children through primary school have led to crowded high schools. Amanda Pease is the only chemistry and physics teacher at her school. She says she has to work hard to get students more interested in learning. She says what she loves best about her experience is the magical moment when students understand a chemical process or ask her for more exercises. More than eight thousand Peace Corps volunteers are currently serving around the world. Volunteers become part of the community where they work and live. "The glories of Pai" Clb2112's photos around Pai, Thailand

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Pai, Thailand by TravelPod blogger Clb2112 titled "The glories of Pai" Clb2112's travel blog entry: "The four hour mini bus ride was probably one of the most amazing and amusing experiences of my life. Hairpin 180 degree turns weaving back and forth up the mountainous ridges of northern Thailand. The driver gunning the throttle between each turn, making it almost impossible for me not to throw up. If the ride wasn't crazy enough, we had a completely insane Canadian geriatric on the mini bus. He raved on and on about how much Thailand sucked, prefacing each complaint with the phrase "In Canada...". Two times he fell out of his seat (he was either drunk or heavily medicated). I counted 3 times where he told people that if he didn't like them, he would "stab them, then shoot them. Just like we do in Canada" he would follow that line with, "but I like you." Tension escalated until it looked like the Swede in the seat next to him had reached his breaking point. Just then, our minivan inched its way up the final ascent. An on board brawl was avoided as the bus came to a stop and we clambered out of the mini bus. Pai is a town near the Burmese border. Its not known for cultural relics or as a center of learning. Pai is the place you come if your idea of a good time is lounging in a hammock all day with a good book and a never ending supply of pineapple milkshakes. My guest house was called the family house. "Hanging out in Beijing" Cjabroad's photos around Beijing, China

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Beijing, China by TravelPod blogger Cjabroad titled "Hanging out in Beijing" Cjabroad's travel blog entry: "For three days before we left for Peace Corps China we had a staging meeting in Chicago, a surreal experience that had nothing to do with what came after. After Peace Corps ended, we had our Beijing staging, ten days in Beijing that had nothing whatsoever in common with what would come after... We left Chengdu on the 26th of July on a train for Beijing along with two other volunteers who had just finished service, Jim and Jen. Jen's sister is working as a nanny in Beijing and had a lovely apartment in the middle of the city, and she's not there right now. So the apartment was generously offered to us and we happily accepted. The apartment is beautiful, a nice one-bedroom place on the 11th floor of a swank new complex, with stylish furniture and great lighting. Our backpacks and piles of gear, books, and clothing looked a little out of place when piled all over the floor. Beijing isn't anything like the China we've been living in for the past couple of years, so there's always a bit of culture shock when we get there and there are so many westerners living and working there. We found a Sichuan-style restaurant that made authentic food and settled in there for many a meal. "Hong Kong to Chengdu" Theklanges's photos around Chengdu, China

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Chengdu, China by TravelPod blogger Theklanges titled "Hong Kong to Chengdu" Theklanges's travel blog entry: "We took the hotel shuttle back to the airport for our flight to Chengdu. We had a dim sum breakfast at the airport, where the food is wheeled around on trolleys and your point to what you want. The veggie was better than the pork, which had a hidden shrimp inside (I don't like shrimp, especially when they sneak up on me like that). We flew on Air China and they treated us very well. We had the feeling they were reading the airplane safety notifications in English just for us. Our first Chinese plane food was not bad, see photo. It did have some unidentifiable goo on rice, a strange meat product and a very spicy hot radish in a package. The radish we brought home as a treat for friends (not well received). We arrived in Chengdu midday and Dylan picked us up at the airport. We took a taxi to our hotel, the Ke Hua Yuan, located south of the city center near Sichuan University and the Peace Corps office. It was a nice hotel, and where Dylan had stayed previously for some training. We spent the afternoon planning our visit and walking around the campus and neighborhood. WR3A - Fair Trade For Used Electronics - Alternative to Ewaste

Boycott E-waste exports? In the 1980s, when people heard about unfair prices paid to coffee bean farmers, some called out for a "coffee boycott". Fortunately, some Peace Corps volunteers and others fought for a saner concept, called Fair Trade Coffee. This video promotes the concept of Fair Trade Recycling, or improving the standards of used electronics exports. It shows both sides of the developing world - the potential dumping ground, yes. But also the wicked smart techies overseas, who want internet, and won't sit on their hands waiting to be able to afford a new computer.
