TEDxUofM - Rebecca Coulborn - Transforming International Aid
Rebecca Coulborn served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso between 2000 and 2001 before being medically separated. She went on to assist the ACLU in successfully challenging a discriminatory policy upheld by the Peace Corps which prevented her from ever completing her service. Rebecca has since devoted her life's research to HIV/AIDS. A graduate of University of Michigan's School of Public Health, she is currently serving with Doctors Without Borders coordinating operational research in Thyolo, Malawi. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Join Us - Stomp Out Malaria
"Stomping Out Malaria in Africa" is an initiative of the Peace Corps that was launched on World Malaria Day (April 25, 2011) in partnership with the President's Malaria Initiative (USAID) and later Malaria No More. The "Stomp Out Malaria" initiative marks the first time in 50 years of Peace Corps history that the efforts of volunteers across a continent have been unified through a single goal: to end malaria. Through our specially trained volunteers and staff (dubbed the "Malaria Team" - featured throughout this video), 23 Peace Corps posts across Africa have been strengthening their malaria interventions, exchanging information and ideas with each other and malaria professionals around the world, and making huge strides as an international team towards malaria eradication. We're excited, and we know that only by working together can we make a huge difference in the fight against malaria. Now it's time for you to join us. What will YOU do in 2012 to Stomp Out Malaria? I am raising college money for three, inspiring students from Malawi - Myson, Gift and Alfred (the "Boys"). From 2006 to 2008 I was a Peace Corps teacher in Malawi at Khwalala Community Day Secondary School. The Boys were promising students with long commutes to school, so I invited them to live with me. What followed was an amazing cross-cultural and interpersonal experience that changed my life and theirs. Due to hard work and perseverance, and despite grinding poverty, each of the Boys has passed the Malawian college entrance examination. Yet, none has money for college. "The Promised Land" 7-29-2011 WtS update
David Peterka, founder of When the Saints, talks about visiting the plot of land in Mponela that senior chief Dzoole set aside for the rehabilitation center. Yesterday I conducted an interview with a nationally known child rights activist who said that Mponela is the place that you go if you want to sleep with a young girl. A few weeks ago I was talking with a peace corps volunteer who's been all over Malawi. In our conversation she referred to Mponela as the armpit of Malawi. I finally got to go see the land that senior chief Dzoole and his advisors set aside for the home. It is beautiful. I bet it's close to 3 football fields and is perfectly placed on the outskirts of the city. Apparently I wasn't alone in feeling the excitement and gravity of the moment. Every chief for miles and miles around Mponela came out for this momentous occasion. There were more than 50 of the most respected men in all of Mponela who came. I got to give a speech about how the heart of WtS is rooted in glorifying and being in relationship with the redeemer of our world. Then I invited them into that partnership to help restore the lives of young girls who have experienced the greatest physical injustice in the world. They all seemed so proud to see a project like this coming to Mponela. This rehabilitation center will be the only one of it's kind in all of Malawi and they see the potential it has to change the way that the country sees Mponela. Instead of a desolate place were young girls are ... From: Dmpeterka Views: 24 0 ratings Time: 04:25 More in Nonprofits & Activism
