Join Us - Stomp Out Malaria
"Stomping Out Malaria in Africa" is an initiative of the Peace Corps that was launched on World Malaria Day (April 25, 2011) in partnership with the President's Malaria Initiative (USAID) and later Malaria No More. The "Stomp Out Malaria" initiative marks the first time in 50 years of Peace Corps history that the efforts of volunteers across a continent have been unified through a single goal: to end malaria. Through our specially trained volunteers and staff (dubbed the "Malaria Team" - featured throughout this video), 23 Peace Corps posts across Africa have been strengthening their malaria interventions, exchanging information and ideas with each other and malaria professionals around the world, and making huge strides as an international team towards malaria eradication. We're excited, and we know that only by working together can we make a huge difference in the fight against malaria. Now it's time for you to join us. What will YOU do in 2012 to Stomp Out Malaria? 11/5/11 VANDER's REVIEW of 'KINYARWANDA" (re Rwanda Genocide) (produced by Aldrick Brown)k
VANDER's REVIEW of 'KINYARWANDA" (re Rwanda Genocide) (produced by Alrick Brown) (Vid clip of Aldrick Brown speaking after the screening)..if this is cut off at the bottom, go to vanderkok.posterous.com 11/5/11 My REVIEW of KINYARWANDA. I just left the AFI screening of "KINYARWANDA" at the Chinese Theatre. The director/producer was Alrick Brown & he made an appearance before & after the film, with some Q&A . When he first stood up at the beginning I thought he was from Rwanda, the movie itself is about Rwana's genocide, about which I personally know very little, & even after the screening am still relatively uninformed...the movie not really being a documentary, but a semi-fictional narrative & story based on the reality of the Rwanda genocide. It's kind of difficult to explain the story, & easier to talk about the facts of Rwanda's genocide, which anybody can probably find out for themselves at wikipedia or other websites. So my question, as commercial movie season begins, as well as AFI season, HOW DOES THIS MOVIE MAKE A DIFFERENCE ? How does it impact me or potentially others. That's what I'm always asking as I watch, as I did likewise last night at the premiere of "J. Edgar"? And how can I make a difference in the future based on my viewing of this film? Well, hopefully, it will give me a little better education on the topic so I can be more informed & compassionate. POVERY IN AFRICA
PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION!!! here is the reality of Africa... the problems in Africa are numerous and cannot be solved by one person, but there are a lot of ways you can help. Whether you just want to donate money or actually go to Africa in person to volunteer, you can do your part. All it takes is a bit of time and the desire to help your fellow man. Difficulty: Easy Instructions 1 Donate money. There are many organizations that are collecting money for Africa. Donate to A Dollar For Peace or Africa Now. The money goes towards supplies, food, tools or resources such as HIV education or teaching someone how to farm. 2 Play the Free Rice vocabulary game. Twenty grains of rice are donated to the UN World Food Program for every word you guess right. This rice goes all over the world, including Africa. Not only are you helping hungry people in Africa, but you're expanding your vocabulary along the way. 3 Sponsor a child in Africa, through an organization like World Vision. When you sponsor a child, they are provided with clean drinking water, proper health care and proper schooling. 4 Learn about problems in Africa and tell others about them. Whether it's the situation in Darfur or deforestation in Tanzania, you can help just by learning about the situations and spreading that knowledge to as many people as possible. 5 Write to your Congressman or Congresswoman. Encourage them to support legislation that helps Africa, like legislation that provides debt relief or sends HIV ... From: yellizy Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:35 More in News & Politics

Peace Corps Volunteers Find a Wired World
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Next year, the Peace Corps will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. Peace Corps volunteers are Americans who teach and work on projects in developing countries. The United States created the Peace Corps during the cold war with the Soviet Union. Today, technology has changed how the volunteers do their work and stay connected with friends and family back home. In the early nineteen eighties, Gordy Mengel served in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Letters from home would take weeks, or months. As a result, he socialized more with people in the local community. He lost contact with friends and family back in the States. Today, Gordy Mengel is a Peace Corps programming and training officer in Rwanda. He says these days are different because of the Internet and cell phone service. When volunteers go back to their homes in villages, they can get on Skype or they give a quick call to Mom and Dad back at home. Sonia Morhange is one of about one hundred Peace Corps volunteers in Rwanda. She talks with a friend in California on Skype, an Internet calling service. She talks with her mother on the phone and e-mails her father. She says: "I can't imagine having been a Peace Corps volunteer in the seventies or the eighties or even the early nineties. I'm just so used to everyone having a cell phone that works internationally. Kids to Kids Video - 2010
Kids to Kids is a youth-led program that creates opportunity for kids to be kids worldwide through the participation in arts, sports, education and environmental projects -- creating a new generation of leaders and global citizens both here at home and abroad. Kids to Kids was started in 2005 by four middle school-aged girls. Their goal was to help children in other countries develop their artistic, athletic and educational interests and enjoy childhood. Their plan was simple: gather money and supplies through kids in the United States and ship them to kids in underserved communities abroad. Initially they collected supplies and money and sent them to the Dominican Republic (DR). In 2006, they made their first trip to the DR to meet the kids they were helping. When they saw the conditions on the ground and realized their ability to create positive changes in the lives of other kids, the girls decided to expand their work. Looking for people integrated into communities worldwide whose judgment they could trust, the girls turned to Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs). Based on discussions with a number of PCVs and the local community leaders with whom they were partnered, the plan to expand the reach of Kids to Kids was hatched. Kids to Kids has come a long way in the past several years! Last year we integrated our successful program into a bigger organization, World Connect, for administrative support. We are now working in twelve countries around the world. We no longer collect ... From: WorldConnectUS Views: 205 1 ratings Time: 05:09 More in Nonprofits & Activism

An Introduction to International Justice Mission (IJM)
by Curtis Romjue of JUBILEE Gary Haugen (Harvard, University of Chicago Law) worked with the US Department of Justice and led the United Nations Rwanda genocide investigation before going on to found the International Justice Mission in 1997. During his time with the UN, Haugen was exposed to a variety of our world's great needs. Some people need food. Others need medical attention. Just as basic as these is the need for JUSTICE. Haugen discovered that there are many groups who bring aid in the form of food and medicine, but where basic human rights are being denied as in the cases of forced child prostitution and slave labor there is often no one to help. If a Peace Corps worker or missionary finds a child without food, the response is rather simple get them food. But what do you do when you uncover a brothel where children (some as young as 5 years old) are forced to perform sexual acts for paying customers? What do you do when you encounter the multi-billion dollar industry of rape for profit? Go to the police? Unfortunately, too often the police are part of the problem. Their silence is for sale. So what now? Haugen learned that to help these victims of injustice, you must work within the appropriate channels of law. IJM is composed of legally trained professionals who conduct private investigations, documenting evidence in cases of injustice. Not relying on the local police force alone, IJM ensures that this evidence reaches the courts, and labors diligently for the ... From: cromjue Views: 918 0 ratings Time: 04:50 More in Music

During my service as a Peace Corps volunteer from July 2008-August 2010, I taught secondary school English in the West African nation of Benin. Although the national language in Benin is French, most students are not fluent in the language and speak local languages at home and in the village. In this video, you can see what a typical public school looks like in Benin- cramped, crowded, dirt floors, cement walls, one blackboard.... and me, the teacher. The students did not own books and most only had two notebooks and a pen for school. I loved teaching and I will never forget my students as long as I live! In this video, I am teaching "Prepositions" to the first-year students. I choose three students to be examples for the lesson, Mouidine, Derou and Dorcasse. As you can see, Dorcasse can barely contain her excitement from shouting out the answer! I ask the students for the words in French and English. This was one of my favorite lessons. I own nothing. This is something my friend and I came up with when we were bored. I hope you enjoy it, don't hate. If you hate what you see, then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Go join the Peace Corps! OH WAIT, they're already overstaffed as it is! Looks like you just gotta sit here and take it. From: Infidelslayer42 Views: 412 0 ratings Time: 04:36 More in Film & Animation

John McCain: Saddleback Forum 08/16/08
John McCain Saddleback Civil Forum Lake Forest, CA 08/16/08 TRANSCRIPT: RICK WARREN: What's been your greatest moral failure, and what has been, what do you think has been the greatest moral failure of America? JOHN MCCAIN: "They don't get any easier." WARREN: No they don't. MCCAIN: "My, my greatest moral failing, and I have been a very imperfect person, is, the failure of my first marriage. It's my greatest moral failure. I think America's greatest moral failure has been, throughout our existence perhaps we have not devoted ourselves to causes greater than our self-interests. All though we've been the best at it, of anybody in the world. I think that after 9/11, my friends, instead of telling people to go shopping or take a trip, we should have told Americans to join the Peace Corps, Americore, or the military, expand our volunteers, expand, expand what your doing in. Expand the great missions that you are doing, that you're carrying out not only here in America but throughout the world. Especially in Rwanda, and I hope we have the chance to talk a little bit about that later on. And you know, a little pandering here, the first words of your very successful book is, this is not about you. And you know what that really also means, serve a cause greater than your self-interests."
