Swaziland: going to church in Zombodze

This was a church that my wife and I attended occasionally while living and working in Zombodze (Ngwane) as Peace Corps Volunteers (2008-2010). A storm seriously damaged the building 6 or 7 years beforehand, but the congregation kept on meeting there (not many other options). Eventually we helped them procure materials necessary to repair or rebuild the structure. Christianity is widespread in Swaziland. In fact, I think most Swazis would identify themselves as being Christian. Our Chiefdom alone had around 50 different little churches, all of them similar in style to this one: evangelical, ultra-charismatic, and reminiscent of the Southern Baptist preaching tradition. Swaziland: our school library's grand opening

One of my projects while a Peace Corps Volunteer in Swaziland was to help our host community's primary school establish its first library. In 2009, a fellow PCV launched huge, nationwide book donation project, and we partnered with him to bring a bunch of books to this school-- which served as the main collection for its library. This video shows its Grand Opening. It was kind of a big deal in the community. From: timothyjcook Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:06 More in Travel & Events

Swaziland: kids singing at a Neighborhood Care Point (NCP)

The Chiefdom of Zombodze, in Swaziland, had about 7 NCPs functioning while I served there as a Peace Corps Volunteer (2008-2010, and this is one of them-- near a little store. NCPs function like soup kitchens for orphaned and vulnerable children: they're given a meal and (hopefully) an educational lesson each day. Local volunteers run them, and the food is donated by the WFP and/or USAID, among others. In this video, the kids sing us a song. Swaziland: high school entrepreneurship class wins national grand prize

One of my projects as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Swaziland was to facilitate an entrepreneurship/small business class at Ngwane Central High School in Zombodze. Sponsored by Junior Achievers, this course culminated in a national competition and "top 10" convention in which the grand prize was announced. And my kids won it. This video (2009) shows the moment they won, and how they reacted. From: timothyjcook Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:19 More in Education

Swaziland: Volunteer work day- digging the trench for a garden's new water-delivery system

This was a volunteer work day I organized in our host community of Zombodze (Ngwane) for a Peace Corps service project I did: re-establishing a reliable water system for the community's large vegetable garden. This day, we worked on digging the trench for a new underground pipeline. When finished, the pipeline stretched about 800 meters from a stream-side reservoi, delivering water to 32 spigots in the garden. African Sports Outreach (ASO)

African Sports Outreach (ASO), an international youth development organization committed to supporting at-risk African youth with after school soccer programs, equipment donations, schooling, medical support, and meals. With donations from clubs, high schools, and colleges in the United States as well as sports companies such as Euro sport , Nike, Puma and Adidas. ASO has provided nearly $1 million worth of soccer footwear, apparel, and equipment, outfitting more than 125 sport teams throughout West and Southern Africa. In 2007 ASO opened it's new ASO Togo soccer academy in Lome, Togo West Africa, which supports more than 200 street youth and orphans. When Paul Goodrich founded ASO in 1990 while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Togo, W.Africa, he wanted to create a sustainable program that would provide education and sport while providing a healthy alternative to drugs and a life on the streets. He found the remedy in after school soccer training and matches. ASO uses sport and teamwork to help kids create a positive image of themselves in their communities. Where else to better learn the life lessons of goal setting, self-control, problem solving, team building and friendship than on the playing field? It's a way to channel their energy in a positive direction. Too often the lives of Africa's youth unravel before they have a chance to develop. These kids have seen famine, poverty, disease, and war. But they're hopeful and bright. ASO was born from this unyielding ... From: pgashby Views: 1623 2 ratings Time: 02:06 More in Nonprofits & Activism
