Join Us - Stomp Out Malaria
"Stomping Out Malaria in Africa" is an initiative of the Peace Corps that was launched on World Malaria Day (April 25, 2011) in partnership with the President's Malaria Initiative (USAID) and later Malaria No More. The "Stomp Out Malaria" initiative marks the first time in 50 years of Peace Corps history that the efforts of volunteers across a continent have been unified through a single goal: to end malaria. Through our specially trained volunteers and staff (dubbed the "Malaria Team" - featured throughout this video), 23 Peace Corps posts across Africa have been strengthening their malaria interventions, exchanging information and ideas with each other and malaria professionals around the world, and making huge strides as an international team towards malaria eradication. We're excited, and we know that only by working together can we make a huge difference in the fight against malaria. Now it's time for you to join us. What will YOU do in 2012 to Stomp Out Malaria? Amour et Vie
PSI's Beninese affiliate ABMS launched the sixth Amour & Vie campaign thanks to the Impact program -- a five-year $18 million program funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The Impact program is designed to improve youth behaviors associated with HIV/ AIDS and family planning. Through Amour & Vie, Beninese youth work with ABMS and the Peace Corps to produce this popular weekly radio show and bimonthly magazines designed to address young peoples' questions and concerns regarding sexual health, HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancy, and to encourage them to adopt safer, responsible sexual behaviors. Peace Corps volunteers also organize meetings to talk about issues featured in the magazines. From: HealthyBehaviors Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 03:46 More in Nonprofits & Activism
Library Project Needs your Help!
Hey everyone, my name is Wendy Gutierrez and I am a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin, Africa. I have been and English teacher in the small village of Gouka since 2010. Here, most students do not have any educational resources to help them with their studies. This is why I decided to help my school to create a library where students and teachers can both have access to books and materials to help them better their studies. I invite you to see for yourself and to donate to this cause. We need your help!
Raped While a Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger
Karestan Koenen says Peace Corps' treatment was worse than the rape itself. Catherine Puzey said she lives "a heartbreak everyday" from the loss of her daughter Kate, who she said was murdered on her porch two years ago by a teacher at a school where she taught English in a remote village of rural Benin. Kate had tried weeks earlier to warn the Peace Corps about the Beninese man, Constant Bio, who also worked for the agency during the summers and was already accused of sexually assaulting his students. She emailed her boss but her complaint fell into the hands of the accused killer's brother, a deputy Peace Corps country chief. The 24-year-old was found with her throat slit just days later. Peace Corps- 50 Years, More Than 1000 Rapes?
Transcript by www.newsy.com BY MIRANDA WHEATLEY ANCHOR ALEX ROZIER You're watching multisource US video news analysis from Newsy. "I have two daughters now and I would never, ever, let them join the Peace Corps. ... They raped me with their bodies, they raped me with foreign objects." (ABC 20 The Peace Corps' 50th Anniversary is bringing to light a darker issue within the organization. Over the past year several volunteers have stepped forward alleging sexual abuse and violent acts against female volunteers. A 20/20 investigation found more than one-thousand reports of female victims who had been raped while serving in the Peace Corps - all of those in the last ten years. Take a step back to March 12, 2009, Peace Corps volunteer, Kate Puzey was found dead while serving in Benin, Africa. "In March 2009, she became the 23rd woman in the Peace Corps to be murdered since the organization's inception. ... Puzey's family was disappointed with the Peace Corps following the murder, they were left in the dark on what happened." (KESQ) Other victims echo the Puzey's response, saying the current system in place to help volunteers is non-existent at best. Casey Frazee, founder of First Response Action, says she was sexually assaulted while serving in South Africa in 2009. Frazee turned her experience into an opportunity to rebuild the system. But as she tells Change.org this isn't the first time it's been attempted. The First Steps of International Center for Arts and Music in Ouidah, Benin.
Benin, Africa. The Ouidah International Center for Art and Music (Centre International d'Art et Musique de Ouidah, CIAMO) has opened in Benin, Africa, with a goal of providing art and music education to primary school children and teachers, and to offer professional development seminars to area artists. The first school of its kind in the country, Ouidah International Center for Art and Music will offer music and art classes (folk, traditional and modern) taught by a variety of resident and visiting international professionals, and the school itself will be staffed by American teachers funded by the United States Peace Corps, electric guitarist Leni Stern, and a variety of local artists. The art and music school will teach 300 children and art and music will be part of the daily curriculum, free to all children. It is similar to the art and music model we have in the US for public school students where children in elementary schools have exposure to art and music as part of their curriculum. The Ouidah International Center for Art and Music will be a collaboration between the community , the teachers of the school, and US-based teachers, teaching a variety of styles including those that are native to Benin. We will also be using the school as a model for primary school teacher training throughout Benin so that teachers throughout the country can improve their arts and music teaching skills. Teaching School in Rural Africa
During my service as a Peace Corps volunteer from July 2008-August 2010, I taught secondary school English in the West African nation of Benin. Although the national language in Benin is French, most students are not fluent in the language and speak local languages at home and in the village. In this video, you can see what a typical public school looks like in Benin- cramped, crowded, dirt floors, cement walls, one blackboard.... and me, the teacher. The students did not own books and most only had two notebooks and a pen for school. I loved teaching and I will never forget my students as long as I live! In this video, I am teaching "Prepositions" to the first-year students. I choose three students to be examples for the lesson, Mouidine, Derou and Dorcasse. As you can see, Dorcasse can barely contain her excitement from shouting out the answer! I ask the students for the words in French and English. This was one of my favorite lessons.
