Camp ALMA is one of the sub-committees of GAD and irrefutably, the most fun. While the other committees have a lot of paperwork, money details and stress Camp ALMA gets to relax and think about CAMP! Within Peace Corps Ecuador we have found a lot of camp veterans, from sports camps, to summer camps, outdoor camps and more and a lot of these veterans claim that camps helped them form who they are and how they interact with people. Camps give young people the opportunity to challenge themselves mentally, physically and socially. We, as Camp ALMA, believe in camps and want to share with young girls of Ecuador the beauty of the camp EXPERIENCE.

Twice a year Camp ALMA gets the pleasure of hosting a Leadership Camp for 16 girls the ages of 15-18 from all regions of Ecuador. These leadership camps are held in different sites in the three regions of the country in a rotating format. The goals of Camp ALMA include developing personal and professional leadership skills, enhancing the participant’s knowledge about gender, workshops on sex education and women’s rights, small business skills and group building activities. It is our hope that this camp leaves a lasting impression on these girls and helps them with their personal and professional development.

CAMP ALMA, Tena, Napo NOVEMBER 2008

The next Camp ALMA will be held outside of Tena in the province of Napo. Tena is known for it’s ecotourism and as an access point to the jungle. The participants are going to learn how to make recycled paper with a woman’s group in Tena, trek through the Amazonian jungle in the Jatun Sacha reserve, do leadership games, presentations and theater and learn about sexual education, women’s right, gender issues in our society and more.
