It is important to understand that not all costume jewelry is the cheap, worthless stuff that can be discarded after wearing a few times without much regret. In many ways the "ultimate" noble metal that one might consider for jewelry isn't gold or platinum but their slightly tan colored cousin iridium. With the possible exception of osmium (which is smelly and toxic) it's the rarest non-radioactive element in the earth's crust -- several times more so than either gold or platinum. It's even more chemically incorruptible than the other two, it's

Hey guys,
I hope you are all doing well! I just want to start this post by sending condolences, healing energy and positive thoughts of hope to the entire Barbados diaspora. As a nation, we are mourning the loss of our Prime Minister, the Rt. Honourable David Thompson. Life is precious...valuable...and a life well lived is a blessing. I think I speak for all Barbadians when I say thank you for his life dedicated to service. With that said, I want to draw your attention to another situation...one that focuses on the preservation of life. I am wrapping up many of my projects now and I know many of you have asked how you can help me in your work. I now have an exciting opportunity to help me with a highly impactful, beneficial project. Through Appropriate Projects, an initiative of Water Charity, I am seeking support to fund the construction of a shallow well to provide sanitary, palatable drinking water to 30 familes...over 120 people...in one of the drought-prone, arid regions in Kenya. You can find my project here! The entire project only costs US $500! That is just over US$4, per beneficiary, for a lifetime of clean drinking water. I am sure you agree with me when I say that clean, safe drinking water should be a basic right for all and I hope you are able to help me help this community attain this. If you scroll to the bottom of my project page you can find the 'Donate' button which links you to a secure transaction page. If my project has been fully funded please still donate to the organization and help fund the amazing, impactful water projects other Peace Corps Volunteers are doing across the world. Thanks in advance, guys! I could not do this without your support and for that I am extremely appreciative. Here's the website again... Regards, Tameisha
Hey guys!
I wanted to share the following with you and encourage you to contribute to the extent that you can. One of my fellow PCVs just got involved with a US charity working in Kenya called ‘Yellow House Children’s Services’, and is helping to establish ‘The Mombasa Children’s Therapy Centre.’ The charity was established to fund disability related projects that need support in Kenya. Disability and poverty are a vicious cycle in many parts of the world; unfortunately for many families with children who have special needs there is a lack of available and appropriate service provision. The Mombasa Children’s Therapy Centre’s idea was conceived and registered locally by a group of Kenyan early childhood and special needs teachers to meet some of the needs of these children. They envision a space, which will function as both a therapy clinic and a special needs preschool/daycare, that enables mothers to return to work. The team of professionals working on this project is diverse and includes Bea Staley, who has been doing amazing work in Kenya as a Speech Language Pathologist and education trainer on and off for the past 4 years. The Centre is set to open by November 1, 2010 and will serve children (aged 1-5) from low-income families. So far, they have acquired a building and an initial staff (an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a speech therapist, and four teachers) but they still need your support. Life in Kenya is outrageously cheap compared to life in the USA. Yellowhouse has estimated the annual operational cost of the Centre at $25,000. In the USA, this would not even cover a teacher’s salary for one year but, in Kenya, $25,000 will provide rent for the building, salaries for the entire staff, food for the children, and therapy and teaching supplies. It may sound unbelievable, but it’s true!! Even with such a small budget you can make a powerful impact on the lives of families. We take for granted the role of constant engagement, eye contact, talk and play in a child’s development. In Kenya, as with much of the developing world, there is a lot of shame associated with having children who are ‘different’ and this affects the access these children have to education and support resources. Even with Kenya’s recent ‘Free Primary Education Act,’ children with epilepsy are still seen as cursed and kept at home behind closed doors. Deaf children and children with Down’s syndrome or Cerebral Palsy are often kept from school because ‘they don’t talk yet.’ This clinic space strives to provide a positive learning environment to help children develop functional skills, while still in their pre-school years. If you like what you just read, and want to help, you came to the right place. You can email Bea Staley (beastaley@gmail.com) or PCV Beau Jones (beaujns@gmail.com) and/or send a check to: Yellow House Children's Services c/o Bea Staley 618 S. 5th Street Columbus, OH 43206 USA Thanks guys!!! Meish
Is it weird that I never thought about working for myself?
Today we learned about developing income generating activities for communities and my first instinct was not what I would have expected. I was pretty interested at the thought of being a part of private sector development in Kenya and even helping in a consulting capacity but it did not occur to me to implement these activities for myself. Of course, as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I am not allowed to engage in personal profit-making business but, as my Close of Service draws near, I am thinking much more about the future. My initial reaction – being happy helping someone else become an entrepreneur instead of myself – feels so strange to me… My parents both have very healthy work ethics. My father has the full-blown entrepreneurial spirit and always has some side business or venture, and is always looking into expanding his skill set, in addition to his regular day job. I grew up helping him with these projects (read: child abuse) and I thoroughly enjoyed, and now value, the experience. If this is the case why don't I feel the entrepreneurial drive like he does? The rational side of me knows that one does not get rich through working for others. True job security comes from the autonomy and independence afforded through occupying the driver's seat of your own business…and career. This is to not to say I am not a leader and do not have career aspirations…nothing could be further from the truth. I have very lofty plans for my future – financial and otherwise. However, I also know that if everyone refused to work for others we would have no teachers, doctors, waiters, mechanics, and the list goes on. In short…we all have a role to play. However…these are probably just musings of a Peace Corps Volunteer. Perhaps when I am fully introduced to the world where people do what they must and not just what they want, I will become disgruntled enough with the humdrum of the daily grind to develop this entrepreneurial spirit, motivated by a desire for freedom. I am yet young… Well…that's all folks. I am currently in Mombasa at a beautiful hotel for Peace Corps' Cross-Sector Workshop. This is my view: Jealous? xoxo Tameisha
