But here's my fear. Remember during the summer, when oil was $140 a barrel, how airlines started charging for each checked bag? It seemed to make sense at the time: bags weigh a plane down and necessitate more fuel consumption. The playlist thing is a real pain for someone so hypersensitive about privacy as myself. But, yes, having my music library at my fingertips at work is nice. But! I live in the Austin of Texas, and if there's one thing Texans and other Neanderthals love it's bitching about their football team. Look, sorry, guys. It should have been y'all losing to Florida last night, but the BCS screwed you over and then you went and barely snuck out a win against Ohio State, validating your BCS screwing. USC, on the other hand got BCScrewed and then went on to play like the best team in the country. I don't want to get too deeply endicked in this stuff except to say: USC was probably the best team in the country this year. Then Florida, then Texas. Game.

Oh, but here's some nonsense:

Oklahoma & Ohio State should just not be invited to those games any more. Some teams know how to get ready for big games. Texas, Florida, USC -- those are the programs that are legitimate. I'd just assume see those three (along with Utah) in a four-team playoff. No one else is even close to matching their talent.

Right. Texas needed a last-minute comeback to beat a heavy underdog poised for its annual bowl game whuppin'. Next thing you know they'll want Colt McCoy appointed Senator of New York.

I've been trying to use this site Lala as an alternative to Pandora and last.fm for my online music listening needs, but it's not doing it for me. And I haven't even made it past the upload stage. Which has been ongoing for like four days now.

My first problem was Lala was uploading all my playlists, which are not exactly things I like to share, and there's no easy way to make it not do that or get rid of them. My second problem is the upload estimated time went from 1 day 4 hours for most of the first day to 1 day 4 hours for most of the second day to 16 days most of the third day to 12 hours to, now, 16 hours, but it's only uploaded a little over 4,000 of my 14,000 songs. The program appears to have mostly given up at this point, and I'm about at the same place.

I spent a bit of time on "The Drag" today, waiting to go clothes shopping in earnest (but that never panned out). I looked at some clothes at Cream and American Apparel, but then my well-honed aversion to spending held me from seriously considering any purchases. I wound up at Intellectual Property, where an orgy of consumerism (by my standards) swept me up. A new Michael Crichton hardcover for $8! A book about Wendell Willkie for $4! Toni Morrison and David Sedaris books 30% off! I don't get to much book readin' these days, so consumed am I with catching up on Economists and Harper's, so spending $50 at a bookstore is total frivolity for me, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Today was one of these lovely winter days in Austin where it's sunny and in the 70s and I'm happy to live here, even if there is no nature. (In lieu of nature, Austin has flocks--angry mobs, really--of horrid grackles and mutt birds who, say, shit on my head while I'm trying to enjoy a good David Sedaris at Austin Java.)

Ah, but there I was reading a book (with bird shit in my hair that I only discovered after it had soaked in), and I thought to myself how I would like to be published one day, but I don't have the patience to proofread a blog post, let alone an entire sellable piece of writing, neverevenyoumind talent. Sometimes I see Selected Writings (or Letters) of so-and-so, and I think, Well I could do that. Or someone could do it posthumously for me. Maybe after I die they'll go through my gmail and this blog and facebook, and some struggling editor, the rest of the world's legible words having already been mined and published, will deem my small contributions to the written word worthy of their own book.

The unfortunate thing, I think, as someone who holds himself in high esteem, is that The Selected Musings of Chris's Web Portals is unlikely to get off the ground until I attain some measure of celebrity. Triggg Palin will probably get a book deal--if he (she?) doesn't already have one--simply by virtue of being one of St. Sarah's little miracles. Same with the undeservedly famous Paris Hilton, George Bush, Kim Kardashian, and the rest. Maybe I can be famous for my stellar driving record? I'm close to 200,000 miles probably and never an accident. Not even in Austin! Or maybe I'll lead a long, uneventful life only to die spectacularly. Mistaken for a Jimmy Carter effigy and burned to death by the editors of National Review. Yes, there's always that.

Among my many New Year's resolutions for 2009, I resolve to post more on this blog, say once a day? Here are my predictions for 2009:

New iPhones will include an even more passive, half-assed form of interacting with friends than texting, possibly some sort of 'shrug' function.

Barack Obama's uncanny ability to behave like a normal human being will put the cut-rate political satire of SNL out of business for good.

George Bush will find a penny, and he'll be super happy.

Harry Reid will devise a plan to keep Roland Burris from assuming Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat, but then he'll lock himself in his car and Burris will be a Senator anyway and no one will care.

Oil prices will continue to fall, but chic vintage stores will buy up all the product, mark it up 400%, and sell it to hipsters.

Christopher Hitchens will stumble upon my blog and enjoy a hearty laugh.

Indie film gurus Bang Brothers will break into the mainstream with an Oscar contender.

The lost recordings of John Denver will emerge to accolades from Pitchfork.

Sarah Palin will have a half dozen children or so: Brick, Womp, Drip, Spittoon, Mop, and Barack.

Maybe some Jennifer Aniston backlash? Please?

Tony Romo will sign a 40-year $7.3 billion contract with the Cowboys, because he's clearly in a class by himself, the Brett Favre of his time, the greatest sportsman to ever play any game.

OMG JOEBAMA WAS BOOED AT THE EAGLES GAMES LAST NIGHT! You know, I'm always suspicious of every bit of journalism I ever see, because whenever I read a piece about a topic I know something about, the journalist tends to be totally off-base. Now, I watched this game last night, and I didn't recall Joe Biden getting booed. I recalled Eli Manning getting a nice gift from the refs on an intentional grounding non-call, and the crowd booed that. But not Biden. Remember, hacks, correlation does not equal causation! (What I did notice was the camera cut out Cole Hamels, sitting to Biden's left. Madden and whatshisname didn't even mention Mr. MVP. Morons.)

So last night, not a bad time to be a Democrat for a change. I was at the Driskoll when That One clinched it. A couple random thoughts:

I turned to April at one point and said, "This is almost as cool as when the Phils won the World Series!" And some lady in front of us turns around and gives me a dirty look. Chillax, broseph! Democrats win presidential elections all the time, but a Philly team winning a championship? That's something worth shedding tears of joy over.

Every time I saw the words "President-elect Barack Obama" flash on the screen, I couldn't look away. It was just mesmerizing seeing those words.

What the fuck is wrong with Alaska? Only a state where Sarah Palin can pass as a reformer would re-elect a convicted felon to the Senate. I'm joining the Alaska Independence Party.

I wore my finest outfit, cuff-links and everything, and while I was walking down 6th Street back to my car someone from the rooftop of Maggie Mae's heckled me for being a Republican. Liberals, we're the establishment now. It's time we dressed the part.

Barack Obama has yet to fill my gas tank, pay off my credit card, or get me laid. We've been had!

Judge Goodwin considers election a success, despite loss

Goodwin, appointed to the recently created bench by Gov. Rick Perry last year, considers it a victory that the 38.15% of the vote she garnered was better than the 34.23% that Sen. John McCain got at the top of the Republican ticket. “In Travis County, in this atmosphere, that’s pretty good I think,” she said Tuesday night.

Right. Goodwin was similarly thumped by Susan Steeg in the 2006 election for JP in precinct 3. Here's hoping the Melissa Goodwin electoral juggernaut enjoys similar, um, "success" in many future elections.

There's actually one thing me and Kathryn Jean Lopez have in common: we're both pretty well convinced Obama is going to lose this election thingy on Tuesday (or Wednesday? Haha, just kidding; no one is taking any steps to ease the strain on the polls during high turnout). John McCain is going to President For Life until, like, March, and then that Sarah Palin broad will rule us all forever from jail with Ted Stevens. (The real shit part's going to be those insufferable SNL politics skits being the only thing on stupid TV until Estonia or whoever overthrows the US.) Baby-Face Mitch McConnell will somehow swipe back the Senate, and one of those Republican dudes with a comical last name will be Majority Leader. And why? Because we're stuck with dimwits like this running our GOTV effort. I dunno, maybe the Nazi-moron persona will pick up a few Republican votes at least? I'm gonna need more Knob Creek.

Is this the October Surprise we've all been waiting for? McCain endorsing Obama in 2012? In all seriousness, is there any other conceivable way for McCain to win this thing than by naming Obama his running mate and making a one-term pledge? (Oh my, The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" just came up on my last.fm. I guess Christmastime is here.) With Sarah Palin and her bloodthirsty cohorts on the right wing ready to throw McCain and moderation under the bus on November 5, dumping them first might not be a terrible career move for a man who carried the Democratic banner as well as anyone from 2000 to 2004.

This World Series had, before last night, been a bit of an embarrassment to MLB officiating. Then, as if to say, 'You call that embarrassment? Watch this!' baseball let the potential clincher of the World Fucking Series go on through 6 innings of 40-degree torrential rain. Just to rub it in, just a little Fuck You from Fox to the fans, Joe Buck and Tim McCarver periodically showed the giant swathe of dark green settling over the East Coast. Is Bud Selig really still the used car salesman-in-chief? Can we fix that now?
