So several people have asked me what I’ll do with this blog now that I’m back. I honestly doubt that I’ll update it much, since Blair’s life in the USA isn’t as exciting as my Peace Corps life. I did want to give a wrap-up of my post Peace Corps travels, though. I traveled for [...]

Wednesday, Sept 7 Today we went to Las Penitas beach outside of Leon. It was basically just us there. Really strong waves so we couldnt swim, I basically stayed out of the sun as much as possible but still ended up with crazy burn lines on my legs. Ridiculous. Ive been sick on my stomach [...]

Saturday, Sept 3   I’m officially done with Peace Corps! Another volunteer asked me how it felt to be done. There are so many emotions, but I CAN say that I was crushed to leave my site, but I am thankful to be done with Peace Corps. I am proud of my two year service, [...]

July 17, 2011 The stove project has officially begun. We did our first construction at the new women’s restaurant/micro-empresa in town, and we invited one class of high school students so they could learn how to do it, and then help us later on in San Ignacio. They really enjoyed it and learned quickly. I [...]

June 26, 2011 (be prepared, it’s a long one) The fact that I am even writing this blog right now is a miracle. Our power has been on and off for the last few days. This afternoon it came back on after being off for a day, and the few hours it was on yesterday [...]

June 3, 2011 I have less than 4 months, maybe just 3 months left. This week has been extremely boring, not too much to do, and I think it makes me more anxious to leave. My parents visited for a week and I think saying goodbye to them makes me just want to get back [...]

May 19, 2011 Zach, my sitemate, and I are working on a project for improved stoves in one of the poorest and most remote communities of Camasca, San Ignacio. We submitted a proposal for funds from the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas to build around 80-90 improved wood-burning stoves. As a lot of [...]

April 28, 2011 PART ONE-BRIGADES It’s been a busy couple of months! I participated in a medical brigade at the end of March in La Palma, El Salvador. I helped last year and it was a good experience, although I was a bit bummed that some friends from last year weren’t able to come along [...]

March 7, 2011 How are we in March? On that note, how is it 2011? I can’t believe I only have until September in this country. I’ve thought about staying until November, but really, that’s still only several months more. I can’t say that I necessarily want to stay for longer, but it is weird [...]

Friday, February 25, 2011 Thanks to everyone for your concern about my health. I am feeling better overall, although today my stomach is ultra sensitive again. I think I just will have to be conscious of what I eat and super careful for the next few weeks. Which is not great news considering I’ll be [...]

January 27, 2011 I’ll continue telling you every detail about my daily life in Honduras, because I know it is oh-so-interesting… I received some bad news that a friend of mine in Peace Corps had an assault in her town this week, which has been hard for me to deal with. I think sometimes as [...]

January 23, 2011 So my main activities this past week were doing nothing, and doing nothing, and a little bit of trying to organize people to want their market to be better. The Sunday market in Camasca used to be the best municipal market in the area, but over the areas various factors have caused [...]

Wednesday, December 8, 2010   So I finally got my hammock put up yesterday, which was an adventure in itself. I don’t have hammock hooks so I was just going to strap it between some beams of my roof, but tying the knots with rope turned out to be trickier than Zach and I had [...]

Sunday, November 28, 2010   Happy late birthday to my little niece Emma! She doesn’t check my blog as often as she should, so her dad Travis will have to tell her about this shout-out. She is three years old now, crazy, thinking that I’ve now missed two of her birthdays. Tomorrow is my mom’s [...]

Monday, November 22, 2010 I guess I can’t even try to write about all the things that have happened since I last wrote. One of the big things that has happened is that we finished the Yo Merezco abstinence project! With a lot of success, I would say. We carried out the project in 5 [...]

Sunday, Sept 12, 2010 Isn’t it weird that September 11 came and went and I never even realized the significance of the date? So tired even though its only 7:30pm. I have been exhausted lately, not really sure why. Yesterday I slept until almost 10am which is so late for me, then did a bit [...]

Wow, can’t believe that I have been in this country for now more than a year! Still haven’t completed a year in Camasca until October, but it will be here soon enough. Don’t have time to write much, but I’m still alive and well and surviving rainy season. Will write soon.

SO I know I´ve been a bad blogger lately and you are all dying to know what is going on in Camasca. Here is a quick review. The big annual fair just passed in Camasca, it was really a lot of fun. The first three days of it we had the big training Ive been [...]

Friday, July 2, 2010 Housing drama continues. There was another possibility of a house, near the Catholic church. I went with Iris before I left for my training in Tegus last week, talked to the owner on the phone, and he seemed nice enough and said he’d come show me the house. We dropped by [...]

Monday, May 31, 2010 Happy Memorial Day! Just like the USA, no one worked today in Honduras either, but wait, it wasn’t really a holiday here….Kinda getting annoyed at all the non-working that’s been going on here lately. Well I will preface my little rant by saying that we have had a TON of rain [...]

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 Went to La Hacienda today, and it was good to see the girls again. We talked about puberty and the differences in changes boys and girls will experience, which they seemed to get more or less. The concept of sex vs. gender I think went over their heads, but I saw [...]

Wednesday, April 22, 2010 So I was surprisingly pleased at how the lesson went yesterday in La Hacienda. We talked about the female and male reproductive systems, and I haven’t seen them this animated about anything yet. It may have to do with the fact that it is an easier theme to grasp (than abstinence and [...]

Friday, March 5, 2010 This last week has been busy and great! My project director said that I shouldn’t take too much on, and I know she’s probably right, but I just function so much better when I have more structure and things to do. I’ve been spending a lot of time at the colegio recently. I’ve [...]

Sunday, February 28, 2010 How is February almost over? It’s weird, time passes strangely here. The days seem to pass so slowly, but I feel like it is always morning or night here, and the weeks as a whole pass quickly. Quick wrap-up since last entry—went to a parents meeting at the colegio on Friday morning. There [...]

Wednesday, February 24, 2010 Wow so I am so exhausted. Yesterday I played basketball with some young people in my community and it wore me out. I am not in the shape necessary for running back and forth for an hour. We played five against five, mixed girls and guys, and there were no breaks, full [...]

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 The internet is out in the Peace Corps office, which is super since I got here at 6am to use it. I’m catching a free ride to La Esperanza with the Peace Corps doctor so I had to be here early, but not this early. Oh well, it gives me a chance [...]

So I forgot to mention, Pepe Lobo took office as the new president of Honduras last Wednesday. I didn’t hear of any demonstrations or violence, although sometimes my US friends and family know more than I do about Honduran news. Mel Zelaya was pardoned for whatever he did (or didn’t do, depending on who you [...]

Monday, February 1, 2010 So my last week wasn’t too exciting, mainly consisted of English classes, visiting with Yolanda and Iris, and unsuccessful attempts at using the internet at the local NGO. We’ve also had a lot of problems with water in my town, so we’ve had very limited water with which to wash clothes and [...]

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 Julio is officially mayor! I was told the ceremony started at 8, 9, 9:30, and around 10. So I wasn’t really sure what time to arrive, but played it safe and came at 9. No one was there. So I went over to Yolanda’s and came back around 9:30, still no one. [...]

Friday, January 8, 2010 HAPPY NEW YEAR! I know it’s belated, but it’s still worth something. So New Year’s made my sad Christmas feel a lot better. I was in Tela for 4 days and had a great time, overall. The first night we arrived, we went to a bar and had some drinks, and on [...]

Tomorrow I leave for Tela! I´m excited to just have something to look forward to. Like I said, Christmas was a bummer and so it will be nice to see some other volunteers I haven´t seen since Swearing In. There are quite a few of us, so I´m praying for patience and love, haha. I´m [...]

Sunday, December 27, 2009 So Christmas was a bit of a let-down for me. I knew it wouldn’t be the same as being home, but I didn’t realize how different it would be. Let me start out by covering some pre-Christmas activities. The 18th I was in La Esperanza for the 50th wedding anniversary celebration of my [...]

Its been a while, I know. I´ve actually been fairly busy lately, but here I am in La Esperanza, trying to get some errands done, and I´m finally posting… Thursday, December 17, 2009 Warning: this will be a long entry! Grab a beverage and a snack and get ready. So the first week in December consisted of a [...]

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 So I’ve been in my site now for 2 months. It feels like SO much longer. I feel like I’ve done so much, met so many people, and had so many great experiences already. Thanksgiving made me think how blessed I am. Overall, I’ve been healthy, I’ve been placed in a great [...]

Another long week has passed by, eventful as always. Here is the wrap-up from where I left off: Last Thursday, I went to a quesillo training with PESA. No one in our community currently makes it, and so it could be quite profitable to produce it. The process is kind of complex and involves math in [...]

Wednesday, November 4     So last Saturday morning I took the early bus to La Esperanza, and spent time with my Honduran friend Ana and her family. I ran some errands in the morning, and then around lunchtime I head back to Ana’s and get to meet everyone. She has 4 siblings, 3 in Honduras, and her [...]

Ok, so I know I´ve confused quite a few of you using acronyms…. PESA: a subproject of FAO, which is a worldwide organization funded by the UN and other nations, PESA works in food security issues. Based in Camasca and works throughout the department of Intibuca. CARE: Care International is another international NGO, works on food production [...]

So Thursday was graduation from the high school and I attended, as my counterpart Iris is a teacher and the secretary, and her husband was the MC. Saturday, October 24, 2009   I can’t believe it’s almost Halloween and I’m not preparing for a costume! It just isn’t right. There is a huge Peace Corps celebration in Copan for the whole weekend but new volunteers can’t go, so that’s a bummer. Next year I suppose. I may go to La Esperanza, just to at [...]

Wednesday, October 21st: Sounds of Camasca, Why Start on Time When You Can Start Late? So this morning I awoke to a chicken being killed outside my window. Yes, my host mom said we needed to have chicken soup and killing your own chicken is healthier than the store-bought chicken, so she had one brought in [...]

Saturday, October 7   Not too much to say. Thursday morning I went with Susan to visit the aldea where she has done her dental charlas. We did some other activities and then had tutti frutti, a traditional party favorite here. Susan made hers without added sugar since they had been learning about dental health. It’s basically [...]
