I am really full right now. Just got done eating a bunch of pâte; a staple in the Togolese diet. I ate it with a sauce made from baobab leaves, which I’m told is a traditional Kabyie sauce. Pâte is … Continue reading →

Amazing, I think that trash is one of the biggest issues throughout developing nations. I am so impressed that you tackled such a huge project. It sounds simple, but it is a really big deal! I hope it ends up being sustainable! Damn corruption.

Hundred Years of Solitude is a fabulous book! I am moving to Lome on August 26th. I'm a former PCV (Macedonia) moving to Togo to teach English at the American School. I am sending an open invitation to all PCVs to visit my son and I whenever they are in Lome. My email address is meg_pierce@hotmail.com, the best contact until I settle in. Also, I was hoping I could get in touch with any PCVs living in Lome. I need some recommendations for a French and possibly Ewe tutor and I'm looking for a nanny to start Sept. 30th for my 5 year old if anyone knows anyone near the PCV office in Lome. Thanks!

Martin, Greetings from Amsterdam where we've been on vacation now for a few days. I'm heading back to Orlando in a few hours. You will forget so many details of your time in Togo later on, so PLEASE write as much as you can. Write everything. Write often. But most of all, WRITE. Your news is always great! Keith Folse

Hey Martin! Great work. I like seeing what you're up to and what you're learning through all your travels. Here is a site that may be of interest for a new way to get information to those who need it; social networking for remote areas. Best wishes to you, Lorna http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sarah-costa/using-social-media-to-sav_b_851492.html

Yes, I am most definitely wanting more postcards! I appreciate everybody's help with this!

This was a really awesome post! Many of us sitting back here in the states can only dream of experiencing something like this, and despite the struggles, it seems you're handling everything really well. And even more importantly, you're humbled by it all. Good for you. Everything you're going through now will certainly change the way you see things in this world, and it'll be something you'll never forget. Although, I'm sure you already know all of this ;-) PS - I'm in some of Dr. Folse's classes, who has told us about your blog. I promise I'm not a random creeper leaving you a comment hahah ;-)

Hey, I was wondering if you are still wanting postcards? If so let me know and I would be glad to send one! Thanks and good luck!

Also, I like the bit about a camel. It sorta reminds me, in a round about way, about this short story I ready in Asian Humanities called "A Horse and Two Goats" by R. K. Narayan.

Sounds like a deal to me! Modernized countries have lots much of the art of bartering; plastic bank cards and the capacity to track money for taxation have almost removed it from society. Bartering is still a valuable skill when traveling and in business. This piece will make for an interesting addition to your resume or cover letter. P.S. How's about some more pictures in your blog Marty.

Hello! I was directed to your blog by my professor, Keith Folse. I thought you might be Mike's (my cousin) friend Martin, and it turns out you are! It's been really interesting reading about all of the cultural differences, and your experiences in general. You're doing a really great thing. Just stopping by and saying hi. Also, would you like another bag of skittles? Might come in handy again. :)
