There has been a lot of activity in the yard of late. From a new calf to chicken-turkeys and the cat’s first birthday, things have been going wild (Har. Har). I have to say, the cow had the looooooongest pregnancy ever. Maybe it just felt like a really long time. I actually thought that it [...]
you know what that means?! i’m 5 1/2 months from finishing up my 2 years in the peace corps. however, that also means it’s time to stop fooling around and get on with ADULT LIFE. that, in itself, is daunting enough. luckily, the world did not end on the stroke of midnight, january 1, 2012. [...]
Good to get your reply!! Keep up the good work.
haha mr. poyner! i have been saying since day one that the time for me to leave this country is when i can tell the difference between pig, cow, dog and horse poop. unfortunately, the rest of my walk (on an unpaved cow thoroughfare) is not pictured. thanks for reading!
I really like the expression of the 1 year old. Where is the picture of you on your birthday?? That walk looks a lot better than facing traffic in a car. Do you have to wash your shoes of cow dung every day? Great to hear from you.
I looked at your post again and noticed the picture of your walk to school. I didn't see it the first time. I think because I didn't click on the words. That is a great picture. I love the information about the washing machine. Enjoy Halloween!!
i totally left out the fact that we have a brand-spanking new washing machine. that might have been the best part of summer…sorry parental unit. clean clothes > 1 week visit with the best parents ever. haha! and, the header image is a view on my walk to school. and the hill i have to [...]
Kaitlin: It was great to read your post!! Happy 25th Birthday. I'm so pleased that your classroom is finished. Have a great year!!
My sincerest apologies for completely abandoning this blog for, oh…6 months. A bit of stuff has been going on and I’ll try to fill you in as best as I can. Needless to say, 6 months is a really long time. So, let me take you back a ways: Thankfully my first year of teaching [...]
my host cousin, misha andghuladze, performing at a bar in tbilisi. he’s also an actor on georgia’s version of saturday night live.
Kaitlin: Great video. It was good to hear your voice. Good Luck!!
I loved this post! I laughed at the "depression-fueled binge" and wish I had had some Canadian cookies to make it through the winters here. I shared peanut butter m&ms with my English teachers, and it basically blew their minds. :) I love the energy in your blog. Thanks!
i uploaded some pictures and video showing off the start of our renovations. there hasn’t been much progress, but it will get finished…eventually! slow and easy wins the race, right?! plus, we’re in georgia. things take their own time. enjoy!
hi sue! thanks for your kind words. every little bit of encouragement helps exponentially! it's because of this kind of support and my one good day in 10 that i'm still doing this. thanks :]
Hi, Kaitlin,
My name is Sue Podsiadlik and I work with your mom in the Circulation dept. of TPL. I have been following your posts and just want to tell you how amazed I am with you and your work with the Peace Corps. In eons past, I also trained to teach, but beat a hasty retreat when faced with just a little of the attitude problems you describe. So let me encourage and praise you for not only sticking it out, but making a huge difference in so many lives by doing so. It is true, as you said, "... it’s the small differences that make the biggest impact." Keep up the good work and God bless you!
Hi Kaitlin:
Your post was so interesting to read. It would be so hard to teach if the students don't attend regularly. That is great that you have an English Club. I laughed at what you said about most of your teachers put the fear of God in you but not me. I took that as a compliment!! I know your parents are so excited about their visit this month. Enjoy your time home in August. We just got home from spending a week in Germany and a week in Paris. The weather was perfect.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jefferies
2 Wednesdays ago was the one year anniversary of the g10s arriving in Georgia! More importantly, only 14 more months to go! As for any celebrations…I went to school. But, I feel that it is time to reflect on my experience so far. I purposely held back from doing this in previous posts because I [...]
next to the ‘home’ tab on my blog, i have added a ‘classroom expansion project’ tab. here you will be able to view photos, videos and updates regarding the classroom expansion project currently ongoing at my school…with the help of your contributions! unfortunately, my internet is not good enough to upload videos and pictures at [...]
Sooo interesting! I died laughing about the carnivorous tendencies of your family pig. I want a piglet! haha If only I lived in a place that could keep one...
does this mean you cannot outrun or out smart a pig?
Another wonderful narative!
Dad
Kaitlin:
It is so neat to read your posts. Keep up the good work!!
so, there have been a number of animal goings-on for the past couple of weeks. i figured i’d give them their own post. enjoy! a couple of weeks ago i was walking to school (and probably running late, as usual) and happened across a female pig running up a grassy hill to the right of [...]
check out this fantastic website designed by fellow georgia pcvs celebrating peace corps’ 50th birthday and 10 years in georgia. also, check out the “live like a pcv” section. will you accept the challenge (that i live with pretty much everyday)?! http://pcgeorgia50.tk/ cheers!
Kaitlin:
That is great news!! We got a nice thank you from the Peace Corp also in the mail.
Keep up the good work!!

i found out fantastic news 2 weeks ago: thanks to all of your donations, my community’s english classroom expansion project has been fully funded! once i receive the funding (and weather permitting) we will begin restoring an unused classroom in my school. i encourage you all to keep an eye out for future posts pertaining [...]
hi there 2011! so despite being away for most of the georgian winter holidays, i figured i should still put a little bit in here about the cultural significance of the many winter-related holidays here. christmas – january 7 georgians celebrate Christmas (შობა) on January 7. on the night before, all churches in the country begin [...]
there will be another post after this, i promise. let me take a moment to direct your attention to the upper right hand corner of this blog. there you will find a link that will send you to the PCPP (peace corps partnership program) website and directly to the description of an “english classroom extension” project. [...]
1) my host mom doesn’t like to see things go to waste any more than my mom does. case in point: in the episode of glee (კლუბი – clubi, in this next of the woods) where puck confesses his love to quinn and promises to help take care of their baby both characters get into a [...]
NO SCHOOL…but that’s a given poopless shoes while vacationing in paris. no farm animals in the city of love! jen & anthony’s wedding (i can’t wait to see pictures!) english tv…even if it’s just the bbc and cnn HARRY POTTER! seeing my parents…sorry that you weren’t further up there guys. but seriously, poopless shoes will [...]
as promised, here is my list of what i am most thankful for for the 2010 thanksgiving season: my family (at home…and in georgia) my dog, bailey my friends (both old and new) teachers…because now i know how it feels to be one. it’s really hard. going to college the opportunity to live and work [...]
so there isn’t too much to update you all on. but, here goes: i went to my 3rd funeral this thursday. it was a pretty emotional one because it was for one of the teachers at school. she was 60 years old, had had some problems with her heart and got an infection that turned [...]
there have been some requests for pictures of october. here you go! badri and october. :]
so, i may or may not have a parasite. nothing serious…yet. i just wasn’t feeling well the day after my birthday and had some stomach problems for the entire week. i’m doing better now though. again, nothing serious. on to better news…i promised both the 3rd and 6th grade classes that if they behaved during [...]
just like the last post there haven’t been many goings-on to warrant a new post. however, i did get a new set of sheets for my bed. and it’s finally cold enough to sleep with two blankets. finally. also, i have taken to doing my laundry over a number of days because there’s [...]
let’s see. there haven’t really been any new developments in my peace corps experience. hm. school is in session (only 2 more months to winter break!) and i’m still teaching. after a rather stressing and upsetting 10th grade class 2 weeks ago, i asked the director to have a talk with them about their attitudes [...]
well, it’s been begun for 5 months now (whoa. 5 months). but school has started! no more lazying around the house! but, alas, no more getting up at 10. the first day was wednesday the 15th and, my, what a day. there was some slight confusion with the scheduling, mostly on my part because i’m [...]
because i have finally figured out how to upload pictures onto my blog in an easy and efficient manner. funny story that’s completely unrelated to these pictures: this afternoon, during the mid-afternoon meal, my host family and i were discussing our meat likes and dislikes. i mentioned that i’m not a big fan of lamb [...]
i found out some awful news this week. on the bright side, it correlates well with my previous cow ranting: my host brother hit a cow sometime ago and now has to pay 2000 lari (to whom, i’m not sure). apparently it happened near by when he was heading back to the capital from visiting [...]
it seems that bovine are in abundance in this country (we have 3). that’s understandable considering they yield protein and calcium. however, i have come to loathe the cows in this country, mostly because they get in the way. they are truly “free range” here…they roam wherever they want. including roads. they are also incredibly [...]
it’s been awhile, i know. but in all honesty there hasn’t been much to report. the following is the basic breakdown of what i have been doing for the past 4 weeks: wake up; eat breakfast/talk with host mom and dad; read, listen to music, surf the internet; lunch; read, sit outside, roam around, go [...]
ahhh! i finally got to go to batumi for the first time on thursday! this fabulous beach town is located on the black sea about an hour from my site. i went in for the day with one of my students who just returned from a year in tennessee. we relaxed, we swam, we ate [...]
