Cloud Forest: A cloud forest, also called a fog forest, is a generally tropical or subtropical evergreen montane moist forest characterized by a persistent, frequent or seasonal low-level cloud cover, usually at the canopy level. Cloud forests often exhibit an abundance of mossescovering the ground and vegetation, in which case they are also referred to as mossy forests.
As I was just informed that my blog was linked to from Stef’s, I feel a little pressure to update. Fortunately, as part of a video project that I’ve been working on for a month or so I’m just getting back from three-day HIVaids conference in one of the most beautiful parts of Nicaragua that [...]
This is an interview that I filmed a while back with Atlantic Coast Historian Johnny Hodgson about the history and annexation of the region.
In the vein of a video that Stephanie and I made with a youth group during our training in Masatepe, this video is the first of what I hope will be several videos about Kukra Hill as filmed and narrated by the youth of the community. The idea is to combine English language training with [...]
The youth program that I work with in Kukra Hill submitted this video to a film contest as a “spot” touching on the subject of teen pregnancy and won! (Then we were disqualified because we edited on Final Cut Pro when the rules were to use Movie Maker…
I’ve arrived in a city called Puerto Cabezas, a day before the opening of the conference that has brought me here and I’ve found myself with the seldom corresponding time and disposition to chronicle my recent goings-on. So I ask myself, “What’s there to say about what I’ve done since last I wrote?” My immediate [...]
Martin: I finished my lesson planning for next week early so I though I’d take the time to answer some of the questions that my grandmother put to me in a recent email and sprinkle in some pictures that I and my photo/video youth group (explained later) have been taking around town. Gran: Your world [...]
Here’s a video of the trip from Kukra Hill to Bluefields, the nearest big city to me. Although I don’t make it that frequently, this 45 minute trip is definitely one of my favorite parts about my Peace Corps site. Is it a music video or simply a video to some rad music? I’ll let [...]

Ginger Beer is a holiday treat on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. Although everyone seems to have their individual preference as to how it should be prepared, one commonality between all parties seems to be an appreciation for a STRONG representation of the namesake ingredient, ginger, that gives a tangy heat to the sweet brew. [...]
Disfruten de este video que hice para conmemorar el Día Internacional de Lucha Contra el VIH/SIDA y como celebramos el evento en Kukra Hill!
Pan de Coco is such a main stay on the Atlantic Coast, that more often than not it is referred to as ‘Pan Simple.’ Not particularly sweet or even coconutty in flavor, Pan de Coco employs coconut milk as a softening agent, turning an otherwise uninteresting white-bread into a deliciously rich, wholesome, and nutritious artisanal [...]
Making cajetas,de coco, a traditional Nicaraguan sweet made of coconut, ginger, tamarind, flour and, of course, sugar, begins with grating the coconut. The next step is to build a fire to do the cooking. Find your biggest pot, put on the fire to heat up, and add your coconut, sugar, and ginger, one pound of [...]
Inevitably all Peace Corps Volunteers will find themselves in the role of a teacher at one point or another during their service. Be it in a formal classroom setting or in the context of a health center, small business, community garden, familial or farm setting, as volunteers we have been brought here to promote sustainable [...]
As of yesterday afternoon, I am back in my permanent site, Kukra Hill, but this time as a Pecae Corps Volunteer—a Trainee, no longer. This past Monday was held the swearing-in ceremony for those of us who had completed the 54th Pre-Service Training program and here’s the proof: above is a picture of me with [...]
My permanent assignment aside, this past week I have been back in my training town, Masatepe, where I’ve been trying to say my thank-yous and goodbyes to everyone who’s been so open, friendly, caring, and to everyone who’s received me so well since I arrived. This week has been pretty packed with meetings with people [...]
Kukra Hill is the name of my permanent site assignment. It is a small (3,000 person) community on Nicaragua’s Atlantic/Caribbean coast. While here isn’t much that I can tell you about the place without having been there—as it only appears in my Lonely Planet guide in passing reference to “Activities” in and around Bluefields—, I [...]
Today’s Sunday but it feels like today should be a Monday, or at least a weekday. This because last week was spent outside of my training town and in the northern city of Matagalpa and therefore it has been a while since I’ve gone about my normal business. That’s not to say that I haven’t [...]
The fact that my pre-service training is already halfway completed snuck up on me. That’s why instead of reflecting on what I have learned and achieved and accomplished over these past six weeks, I have decided to post a video of me, a fellow trainee, two teachers at the high school where I’ve been working, [...]

Granted, there are worse consequences to days of endless rain than the unfortunate decision with which I was faced this morning: is it better to wear dirty but dry underwear or a soggy but clean pair? Still, at six-thirty am, when the reality of my circumstances dawned on me, I was hard put to think [...]
I woke up this morning to the scurrying of a cockroach across the floor at the foot of my bed (see proof above). An astutely aimed grammar textbook resolved the issue, and gave me a sense of accomplishment as I showered, dressed, ate breakfast, and set off for the parade with my host brother. September [...]
Eggs topped with pickled carrot and onion, fried plantain, gallo pinto (aka beans and rice).
r Staging and Orientation have been a whirlwind of activity, hence the lack of communication up until now. Still, in the past couple of days I have met a lot of interesting Americans from a range of backgrounds, from a variety of places in the U.S. (among the more popular being Wisconsin and Oregon) and [...]
It is not my intention to bore anyone with details about my preparations that I have been making for my imminent move to Nicaragua. The last week or so has ranged in tasks from such importance as being vaccinated against H1N1 and saying goodbye to close friends and family to picking out spices to take [...]
Three weeks ago already, I received a phone call from a Peace Corps education placement officer informing me that I was to be invited to join the Peace Corps TEFL (Teaching English as A Foreign Language) Teacher and Trainer program in Nicaragua. As a life-long and firm believer in peace (see photo ——>), I accepted. [...]
É possível alguém falar todas as línguas do mundo?
