Join Us - Stomp Out Malaria

"Stomping Out Malaria in Africa" is an initiative of the Peace Corps that was launched on World Malaria Day (April 25, 2011) in partnership with the President's Malaria Initiative (USAID) and later Malaria No More. The "Stomp Out Malaria" initiative marks the first time in 50 years of Peace Corps history that the efforts of volunteers across a continent have been unified through a single goal: to end malaria. Through our specially trained volunteers and staff (dubbed the "Malaria Team" - featured throughout this video), 23 Peace Corps posts across Africa have been strengthening their malaria interventions, exchanging information and ideas with each other and malaria professionals around the world, and making huge strides as an international team towards malaria eradication. We're excited, and we know that only by working together can we make a huge difference in the fight against malaria. Now it's time for you to join us. What will YOU do in 2012 to Stomp Out Malaria? Peace Corps and VSO Volunteers Collaborate on Education Project in Tanzania

Expanding collaboration based on the partnership that President Obama and Prime Minister Cameron announced in May 2011, Peace Corps and VSO are leveraging the resources of both organizations to improve the lives of poor and marginalized people, and to promote the value of volunteering in global development. Together, they are addressing urgent development challenges in education, health, HIV/AIDS, youth development, gender and climate change by sharing knowledge and training resources. Since the agreement was signed, volunteers from both organizations have collaborated on the Project for Improving English in Pemba, Tanzania to help improve the English capacity of Tanzanian teachers. Peace Corps and VSO are expanding collaboration in many of the more than 25 countries where both organizations work. This partnership will further enhance the effectiveness of more than 10000 currently serving volunteers around the world. Kennedy Kids Raw Footage Sample

Raw footage shot in 2008 for a documentary film. This project, aims to recognize the accomplishments of all former Peace Corps volunteers by documenting the experiences of six individuals who volunteered in the early 1960's. The 6 volunteers returned to Tanzania to find out what became of their work and to revisit the place where they first came of age. Memories run deep as the men reflect on themselves as young volunteers. Looking to finish editing in 2012, but need funds to complete. Village Library Project

During my service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tanzania, I found that my village's education system lacked adequate teachers, supplies, and appropriate facilities. A primary teacher approached me and told me it was always his dream to build a library at Namiyonga B Primary School. We then formed a committee to plan the remodeling of a dilapidated classroom for use as a school library. The classroom had a dirt floor, no furnishings, and a rusty roof that leaked. Thanks to all the generous donors (we received $4293 from American donors), we were able to turn this run-down classroom into a library full of English and Swahili literature. This video shows the whole process. For all those who donated or helped spread the word about this project, THANK YOU! The people of Namiyonga village and I are extremely grateful for your support! Africa

the problems in Africa are numerous and cannot be solved by one person, but there are a lot of ways you can help. Whether you just want to donate money or actually go to Africa in person to volunteer, you can do your part. All it takes is a bit of time and the desire to help your fellow man. Difficulty: Easy Instructions 1 Donate money. There are many organizations that are collecting money for Africa. Donate to A Dollar For Peace or Africa Now. The money goes towards supplies, food, tools or resources such as HIV education or teaching someone how to farm. 2 Play the Free Rice vocabulary game. Twenty grains of rice are donated to the UN World Food Program for every word you guess right. This rice goes all over the world, including Africa. Not only are you helping hungry people in Africa, but you're expanding your vocabulary along the way. 3 Sponsor a child in Africa, through an organization like World Vision. When you sponsor a child, they are provided with clean drinking water, proper health care and proper schooling. 4 Learn about problems in Africa and tell others about them. Whether it's the situation in Darfur or deforestation in Tanzania, you can help just by learning about the situations and spreading that knowledge to as many people as possible. 5 Write to your Congressman or Congresswoman. Encourage them to support legislation that helps Africa, like legislation that provides debt relief or sends HIV medication to Africa. 6 Volunteer by joining the Peace Corps ... From: yellizy Views: 5 0 ratings Time: 01:35 More in News & Politics

Mother of African Orphans (UMTV)

More at umc.org At 71, Kay Oursler calls herself a caregiver. "I have been taking care of people all my life, children, my mother, and now a village in Tanzania." She lives in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas two months out of the year and the rest of the time she lives in Tanzania, East Africa. After 46 years of marriage Kay and her husband separated and at age 65, she joined the Peace Corps and was sent to Tanzania. When she saw the number of children living on their own, mostly due to HIV/AIDS, she felt a calling to start an orphanage and in 2008 she began to raise funds, and make plans to open the Sunrise Children's Home in Uhekule, Tanzania. Her home church, Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church, and others, help with supplies and support for the project. When asked if she feels she is making a difference, Kay reflects: "I hope I am. I've given six years of my life to this village. If I get sick, I'll have to come home, but for right now, I still have energy, I still have challenges, and I still have lots of work to do." "The Capital is Down that Dirt Road" Ligginz's photos around Iringa, Tanzania

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Iringa, Tanzania by TravelPod blogger Ligginz titled "The Capital is Down that Dirt Road" Ligginz's travel blog entry: "Im not sure that I have mentioned it yet, but my legs are cactus on a relatively regular basis...I would say about once a day now or more, from the time I start pedalling and think that they hurt, to the time I get to camp at the end of a long day and realize that they really to friggin hurt! It seems like the first thought on my mind every night as I start my Journal entry (I actually have a good ole' fashioned paper and pencil diary I write in daily, which fuel all these witty new fangled blogs) is that "today was, in fact, a particularly tough one and my legs are toast". No matter the cadence I cycle or the posture, or the chamois or the saddle, there are just too many things that ache between the groin/crotch/****/quad areas. I guess it would be fair to attribute it to the dirt that once again lies between us and the finish line (Arusha to Iringa), although it could be that I have temporary lost a testicle or pulled a heartstring or something. Funnily enough, one of the race leaders had described this as a "Body, Mind and Bike" affair...I was always worried about the bike crumbling 1st, but my bike is laughing last as I fall apart -- luckily my mind is secure, right?!?! The race continues, and while I had somewhat of a desire to slow down, the dirt is my favoured race surface, and the standings ... From: TripAdvisorTRIPWOW3 Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:02 More in Travel & Events
